chain lube
I'm just around 20,000 miles, going from original stock to DID X-Ring, as
well as new sprockets. Is my leftover PJ-1 "blue" O-Ring lube gonna hurt it?

Went by the Owners' Manual max drive chain service length (due to
stretch). Frequently abused, had no problems. Looking forward to the ride a
new drive chain AND balancer doohickey thingy are gonna bring.

I,m still running the stock chain on my 99 A13 using Chain Wax , Its
just now at the streach limit at 20k miles. Its a EK o-ring chain I
believe, and thats what I,m going to replace it with.

Here's some info from Tom Grenon's motorcycleexplorer.com website...
"The KLR like all single cylinder dual sport bikes, all have similar
drive line characteristics that come together to destroy chains and
sprockets in a relatively short distance of 16,000 - 18,000km. I had
gotten tired of such poor performence using the popular aerosol chain
lubricants and decided to try what is written on all RK chains
boxes " lube with 90 weight gear oil", doing that every 150 - 200 km
has produced almost TRIPLE the normal chain and sprocket life, I put
52,256 km (32,660 miles) on this last set before replacement - even
then the chain was running smooth with no tight spots, the rear
sprocket was still in great shape, but it was the engine sprocket
that was hooking that made me do the change."

When the chain is warm I scrub it with WD40, dry and apply chain wax every 1000 miles or so if straight clean street riding, and every time after dirt/mud/sand riding.

One important thing to consider- as far as I know, this test was
conducted with bikes used on the street. I'm guessing a dual-sport or
dirtbike o-ring chain would have WD-40 MUCH higher on the scorecard,
since thick chain lubes just turn into grinding paste in sand or mud.

I've cleaned/rinsed it with WD-40, then lubed it with Maxima Chain Wax. Seems to work pretty well. Tom A14 KDX220> it would have dry. > > Devon
