Wow, I have the same year and exact mods you do! I run 6 disks and 2 1/2
turns on the jet. My bike "backfires" on hard deacceleration, and always
has since I added the Supertrapp. I wouldn't excatly call it a backfire
though, just the sort of popping you'd expect from a 4 stoke that is opened
up a bit.

Adding those discs is going to lean out your mixture, perhaps quite a bit. At the upper range where you are experiencing trouble, the idle mixture screw won't have much effect. <><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Mark, Tell us what the conditions are when it backfires. Closed throttle deceleration. Opening the throttle under light load around 2,500 rpm or so... etc. Any mods to the fuel, exhaust or intake system would be helpful if you could share them too. You could have a leak allowing air (oxygen) into the exhaust system allowing unburnt fuel to ignite. You could have a leak at the intake causing a lean condition. Your valves could be tight with early opening and late closing. Your fuel mixture could be lean. Lots of possibilities so more info is needed to maybe point you in the correct direction for you to continue troubleshooting. Seafoam! Add the recommended amount of Seafoam and bad-da-bing, no more ba-da-boom. I don't know why salty sea water works so well, but it does. I even use Seafoam in my coffee! My KLR had a backfire from sitting and Seafoam did the trick. You can get Seafoam at most any auto parts store. Plus it is the most easyfix, no need to do the carbs float, etc, I'd start with Seafoam.

And most likely is an exhaust leak (at least it was on mine).

There are two places to look for this--where the header pipe exits
the head, and where the header pipe meets the muffler section. At the
head, there's a copper gasket that can be wrecked if you don't get
the pipe into the head nice and flush. At the header/muffler joint
there's a wire mesh/mystery material gasket that can wear away over
time, especially if the bolt holding the pipe sections together isn't
gudentite.
