front fork springs
My stock springs had 5" steel spacers on top of them. I can't recall anyone trying to lengthen those, because the typical response was to swap those springs for the longer Progressive 1151 springs, which called for a 2" long spacer. Many riders added up to another inch to get more preload. I went with an off-the-shelf coupler a bit shorter than 2", and made up the deficit by adding a pair of Don Rolando's super trick fork spring bearings, after first checking with dirt-bike guru Rick Sieman to be sure they weren't snake oil. He assured me they were not, but I'll bet there are not three KLRs on the North American continent that sport this exclusive bit of exotica.
Another approach is to leave the stock springs and add air pressure to the forks, as much as 30 psi. This flies in the face of the printed warnings in the manual to the effect that the Schraeder valves on the fork caps are to be used only to let air out, not put it in. Adding air has apparently caused none of the riders who tried it to blow a seal or otherwise alter their sexual orientation, so I guess it's ok.
