It's my understanding that the very early years have a stamped metal doohickey which is better quality thant the later years. Paul Streeter>It's the same doohickey as a bike made in 87 >I believe.

The 600 and 1st year or two of the 650 did have a stamped 1 piece steel lever. They fail, just differently. They bend right away and don't adjust, being very soft, with the small head adjuster bolt and the big countersink in the case. The double-d hole ovals out, too. I have some pics of some early levers we've taken out at tech days. They aren't pretty. 2 had broken levers. 1 had a broken spring (03 with approx 3500 miles) We left the adjustment bolt tight on all bikes until we had removed the rotor, to see if the lever would move when the bolt was loosened. 3 of the 15 actually adjusted slightly, before running out of spring tension. Most owners had not adjusted them before. All bikes needed more spring tension. All of the bikes were at 70% to 80% of the lever travel, including an 05 with about 400 miles on it. One of the bikes (a '95) did not have broken parts, but was MUCH quieter after the upgrade. All the best, Mike Eagle Mfg & Eng since 1990 San Diego, Ca> gunny? Enquiring minds. >

Gary, Going by memory (uh-oh) it was about 9-6 or 10-5 in favor of the 35mm. All 5 bikes had fairly serious corrosion on the swing arm bolt, and uni-trak bolt, too!> How many took the 35mm and how many took the 38mm springs????? > Gary Parece > 98 concours 102K, ,01 KLR650 9K > 04 WR250F ,04 H-D Road King

Hello All
Where is the best place to purchase an aftermarket Doohickey. Are
they
all about the same in quality or does one stand above the rest? My
KLR
only has about 500 miles on it, but I am going to go ahead and
replace
it just to get that off my mind.
