Although Mobil doesn't have the spec sheets online yet, rumor has it that the new 5W-40 retains the gasoline engine certifications of the previous version. Basically just a label change. The main reason for the change was that there aren't many new gasoline light trucks and SUVs that spec a 40-weight oil--most of the car-like SUVs require 30- weight--so they wanted to advertise differently and get the right viscosities.

Nope, I don't think there is. -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)

Hi Mike, I find that after I start the bike, and then, right after I put in the ear plugs, most of that extraneous noise, just fades away. But, that could just be me operating a N44-32 latitude. revmaaatin. who knows, the more remote the location, the more important is the quality of the earplugs (;>) --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Mike Peplinski" wrote:

Same here. I really don't even listen to the engine. Its just there. Of course any new noises jump out at me like a trumpet, but the standard thumper-clatter is just background. My airhead is like that too. In fact if it ain't making noise, the valves are too tight.

It makes good sense to listen to your engine. The noises I was referring to were "new" noises. It's a lot like the oil burning issue. If your engine always burns a bit of oil, say 1/2 qt. every couple thousand miles, but runs fine, there isn't a prolem. But if all the sudden its consuption jumps to a full quart a red flag should go up. Something needs attention. Personally, I've come to the conclusion that I do not like how my engine sounds with a 5w oil. I ride year round in temperatures down to about 25 degrees and I'm sure 15w flows good enough under these conditions. If I left it outside overnight I might think differently, but mine is parked in a garage. I've got 50K on my engine and it likes the cushioning effect of the thicker oil. Maybe a better anology for this discusssion would have been ... boxers or briefs ;>) I will say though, that the best performance mod I've ever made to the KLR, has been a good set of ear plugs. klr650: diesel or gas oils ?

If you're burning diesel engine oil (higher sulphated ash content and more engine deposits when burned) in your KLR, you might want to regularly use a fuel system cleaner and deposit remover additive. Jim A17

Post by GMac999 » Fri Mar 31, 2006 7:51 pm

Synthetic oils with friction modifiers can cause the clutch to slip. Oil designed for diesels, Motorcycles, ATV's don't have these. Do a search on the group archives and you'll get more than you really wanted to know about oil. One thing to remember, change it regularly. My Response: You all are talking about using synthetic oil in the KLR650. I thought my owners manual said to not use synthetic oil because it ruins the wet clutch. What am I missing? Thanks.
