Yes, it was the doohickey. To date over 4000 KLR
riders have met their fate from DBD. (Death by
doohickey)
Including a member of this board who lost his life
when the shrapnel from the doohickey broke through the
casing of the motor and hit him in the jugular vein.
Anybody remember the guys name? Was it Paul something?

Hello again - anyone have non-serviceable KLR650 cylinder head for a
public-knowledge porting project?

Well, check the rod bearings and main bearings, of course. But if they're
good, he may be correct on what was causing the knocking (i.e.,
precombustion caused by the carbon buildup), I once had a 500 thumper (Honda
Ascot) that had a similar problem that I "fixed" by wire brushing the carbon
off the cylinder head and removing loose carbon from the cylinder head (I
think that was a clogged air filter problem too).
As for what was causing the oil to get into the cylinder, check the valve
guides too, usually heavy oil in the cylinder head if the oil ring is intact
and not out of spec (I presume you checked the end gap?) means a valve guide
is now dumping oil in the cylinder rather than keeping it up in the head.
Especially check the intake guides. Heavy vacuum caused by the clogged
filter could have easily made an already-existing problem much worse.
(Luckily Kawasaki valve guides are available, unlike, say, Honda, who wants
you to buy an entire cylinder head to fix one bad valve guide!).
