tweety annihilated

The post detailing the removal of the Tweety-causing perf tube got
my attention. Fortunately my original muffler is Tweety-free, but a
spare muffler I bought is inhabited, so I decided to remove the perf
tube as described by the lister. Watch out!
I dutifully removed the welds on the aft end of the tube, but it
remined firmly attached. No amount of pulling and twisting could
remove the perf tube. Out of frustration and curiosity I decided to
find out what is actually going on inside. After all, it's a SPARE
muffler.
I hacksawed the end plate off just forward of the weld and it fell
free. Guess what. The perf tube is also welded to the forward end of
the solid tube in which it resides! I suppose if these welds have
broken or were omitted at the factory you could remove the perf tube
as the lister described. Don't count on it.
I decided to make this my "race pipe." I cut off the solid tube
(which is about 6" long and spigots into a large perf tube),
enlarged the hole in the end cap, and welded on a 3" piece of 1.5"
tube as a new exit pipe. I then stitched the end cap back on and
applied some high-heat paint. Looks like a factory piece (except the
welds are much nicer).
The sound level is slighty louder than stock and less "chuffy." And
of course, Tweety is extinct.
