Amigos, Amigettes, In the true spirit of bringing everyone together, I'd like to invite the list to visit my little country, Nuevo Mexico. It's nestled amongst moutains, plains and deserts, has great beaches, and you don't currently need a special visa. The border controls are quite modest, and with some effort, the local language will become your preferred mode of communication. You can drink the water (if you can find it) and our "El President " uses force only when necessary. Come... Visit the Republica Democratica de Nuevo Mexico. Kelly Walsh Santa Fe (the country's capitol). --- Giorgio Trucco wrote:

Totally accepted, it's difficult to get a person's tone of voice over an email... I agree with you, it's an asinine question when followed up with the standard "go back to your own country" followup. Not my style, man... There are aspects of English life I miss and enjoy, and honestly prefer to the American lifestyle (public transport, parks, and pubs to name a few) but I choose to live in the US because as a whole, it's the best country in the world in my opinion. Cheers CA Stu

Chris,

i agree with you on both of these...

Seems pretty harsh to me, considering how many couples need two incomes to have a good standard of living. and for women, it's not neccesarily a matter of being able to afford children, but of having to choose between a career and children. without a reasonable amount of maternity leave, and some assurance of being able to continue their job, they pretty much have to choose one or the other.

What is the upside? And as I understand it, the major reason for our expensive healthcare is drug prices, not malpractice insurance.

Nothing wrong with entry level jobs... For what it's worth, in California (and probably most states) the minimum wage adjusted for inflation is actually quite a bit lower than it used to be. Dirk A18

Here in Santa Fe, the city just passed a living wage ordinance. Any business with 25 or more employees must start people at $8.50 an hour. At first their was some bitching and moaning, but the ones doing the loudest yelling were the companies who could afford to pay their people better anyway. Still, in Santa Fe, $8.50 doesn't get you much. That's why I'm self-employed (or is that terminally unemployed?). It's easier to get the boss to give me more money. He can be an asshole sometimes, however. --- Dirk Beer wrote:

And you are now watching most companies move out of Santa Fe into Espanola. Lowe's, and Home Depot, wait for Target and SAM'S to leave also. Time will tell if the living wage really did any good. I'm betting it's going to cause Santa Fe more economic decline. Denis

No, it's all about sharing, caring, and principles that you stand for, because you separate the wrong from the right. You are free to laugh at me. Hard things to spread around... I know, but still... Giorgio

I agree. I was the marketing director for The MarketPlace Natural Grocery until I went solo, and they will get stung next year when it goes up to 9 something or other. They already started people at 8, so the hit this year wasn't as bad. But in the coming years, I can see a trend towards the smaller guys eventually being affected. As far as more "box" stores moving outside the city limits, the county is in NO hurry to grant them permits, so if they leave, yeah, they gotta go to Rio Arriba, Heroin Capital of Hte USA. Espanola can have them. Actually, I lived in El Rancho for some time and loved it, but the commute to SF during the 285 shitstrom was more than I wanted to deal with. Lowe's however... they were patently declined a building permit in Santa Fe. Seems the Home Depot people have some friends on the Shitty Council (probably that Pfeffer asshole). Small town politics is alive and well here in Santa Fe! Kelly --- denis@... wrote:
