Hey Pat, I found this older post saved in my trip folder. I get the Friday thru Sunday program, but noticed that the start date of the post subject references the inclusion of the 22nd (Wednesday) and 23rd (Thursday). Am I missing the itinerary for those two days or ??? We will be at the Honeymoon Flat campground, selected for its tall pines, being far enough down the canyon mouth to still get decent sun come late September and becasue it is only a mile or so from the Twin Lakes RV park where there is a store and $3 showers. If you are coming from the Bay Area, or places north, plan on camping Friday and Saturday. If ou are coming from SoCal, and can pull it, plan Friday through Sunday and you get a bonus ride Sunday afternoon. FIgure on three season camping gear. Come late Septemer the mornings will be chilly while the afternoons can get down right toasty. If there is any sort of breeze things can be a bit brisk all day. We will be camping at about 6000' and riding to elevations of 9000', with most of the riding in the 6000'-8000' range. As the the KLRistas that showed last year can attest, the ride is about the scenery you get the see and the ruins you can root through and about having enough KLRs to make a decent parade where ever we go. To reach the campground you ride to Bridgeport on US395, take the Twin Lakes turnoff and about 8 or 9 miles later you will reach the campground. The Twin Lakes turn off is at the north end of Bridgeport. Coming from the north its just as you reach town, coming from the south its just as you leave town, The intersection has a gas station on the north west corner and the Bridgeport general Store on the north east side. Coming from the south you see a highway sign pointinh to Twin Lakes and coming from the north I don't think there is any signage. Bridgeport is located about equal distance from the terminus of HGWs 120 (Tioga Pass) and 108 (Sonora Pass) on US395. Not expecting a bona fida gourmet chef to show up we will plan on eating meals at a resturant. For breakfast we got two places, one being the old Bridgeport Inn. For dinner we have a choice of two places with my pick being the Mexican joint in Bridgeport as I've always seen their parking lot filled and I like Mex. Food and gas will be pricey, I think I saw $3 a gallon for regular. For the ride, on Saturday we will take dirt roads from Bridgeport up to the top of Conway Summit, overlooking Mono Lake and then head out east of Mono Lake to pick up the back way into the old mining camp of Aurora, Not much standing there but the cementary, which will be a stop. From Aurora we will take the back way into Bodie. From Bodie we will catch the old stage road over to the old mining camp of Masonic. From there we will cross over to the old mine atop Bridgeport Canyon and then head back into camp. The route will be geared to what a stome stock KLR with a novice rider could be expected to enjoy. I will use the first leg going up to the Conway Summit to determine what the group can handle for the rest of the two days. For Sunday we will take a couple of dirt roads to get over to 108, with a short burst or two on 395. On 108 we will go through the USMC bsae and pick up the dirt orads that nearly make the summit. Once over the pass we will make a last excursion south of 108 getting up to the edge of the wilderness areas along the Sierra Summit. As we make our way down 108 we will stop for a late lunch at Diamond Jims in Mi-Wuk Village, where I have a good friend that cooks lunch and makes some of the meanest burgers you've enjoyed. From there, if everyone is headed west I'll treat you to one of the finest back road rides from Mi-Wuk into Columbia State Park before we part ways. If we have folks going back over for SUnday night we will part ways at Diamond Jims, and I will provide directions for the back way to Columbia. ANyone going back over to camp will get a special ride by dirt road from Mi-Wuk to Strwaberry. I plan to take the 24th and 27th off from work. I plan to get down to Twin Lakes by 1400 to have camp sites staked out. The USFS will let us get about three or four tents to a site with motorcycles so it well help me to know if you plan on showing. Just reply to this post with an email. If you don;t decide until the last minute, no problem. That is an advantage to doing this in September, there are always empty camp sites for the taking. rather anyone comes back Sunday I'll be staying the extra night to savor the weekend if for nothing else. I'll be bringing the firewood and beer for the first night (another reason to geta rough head count of who is coming). All also be bring my truck, with ute trailer, while it wont be needed, if a bike does breakdown this will be the recovery vehicle. This year's event, Friday's beer and camping, up to the first $100 will be on General Electric. I got a "Night on the Town" bouns for being a good wage slave and I figure the Rendezvous will be the best bang for the buck I can get from this largess.
