You'll probably get 75 different answers, so good luck sorting them out!
Back in the late '70s and early '80s when I was doing articles on
originality for TSO, I came across old black & white factory engine photos
showing what appeared to be a variety of color combinations. Whether they
were all production line engines or whether some of them were dolled up
for the photographer is unknown. My conclusion was that *most of the
time* the engines were completely assembled before painting, so the
thermostat housing and all the aluminum parts ended up engine color. I
have no idea whether that was the correct conclusion, but it was supported
by the best evidence available at the time.

Personally, I prefer to leave the aluminum parts unpainted, and to paint
the various brackets and odds and ends of small parts black to contrast
with the red engine paint, but that's just my preference.

By the way, some TC water elbows were cast aluminum alloy, some were cast
iron. I've never seen anything to indicate which was used when in XPAG
production.

Alan,

I too tried to "get things right" as far as I could in my rebuild. I
reckoned if I was going to spend tens of thousands of dollars it made sense
to do some research. Before I discovered the list I pursued several avenues:-

Firstly, contemporary photographs; my standby and goal has been photo
number 24393/1499 from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust in Gaydon.
Mine is an early TC (November 1945) and the photo was taken on the 20th
September 1945, so I reckon it is close enough! This photo is shown (rather
poorly) on page 45 of Graham Robson's original "The T-Series MGs", 1980 and
several other publications. Another shot on page 143 of Mike Allison's "The
Magic of MG" shows a clean XPAG and to my eyes both indicate that the
thermostat was block colour.

Secondly, careful examination of your original component can usually indicate
what colour it was painted. There's usually a nook or cranny that escaped
the paint stripper, blast nozzle or wire brush of the previous owners.

Thirdly, go to meets and chat to owners, take photographs. There are still
some cars that are relatively original, - usually the scruffy ones!

Does it matter, - no. Is it interesting, - yes. Do you care what others
think - I hope not!

Keep asking the questions,

John
