AW: [mg-tabc] Rear Wheel Bearings

Post by paroor@t-online.de » Sat Oct 23, 2004 1:12 pm

Hi Peter,
May be I can make some recommendation of fitting speedy sleeves
and bearing.
Heat the sleeve either in hot air ( heat it in cooking range when the wife
is not at home, Or use a shirt pressing iron upside down ) it will slide on
the axle with out any stress. You do not have to buy any pipe. Never use
any hammer on any of your bearings. It will shorten the life of the bearing
very much. Slide / insert it in position by heating either bearing or the
carrier. I spoiled many brand new bearings during my apprenticeship. I had
to replace the new bearings several times till I learned craft.

rear wheel bearings

Post by Walter Prechsl » Fri Oct 29, 2004 11:21 am

hello TABCers

i would need a hint how to get out old rear wheel bearings from the inner
hubs. i have the hubs dismantled and the inner parts on my work bench, but
don t
know how to get the bearings out?
should they come out easily, ie. with a vice or do i need a big hammer or
hydraulic press for this?

regards
walter

Walter,

You can hammer them out with a drift...assuming you are going to discard
them. If you intend to re-use them, go to a shop and have them pressed out.
When you refit them, or new bearings, have a shop press them in. Madhu may
have some other alternatives.

Hi Walter,
The bearings in the inner hubs are not very tight fit. In normal
case one can use a puller. One can also heat the hub with a gas torch a bit
it will fall out easily. While running the outer case of the bearing get
heated and it will become more tight, not loose.

Walter,

I have used a brass drift/rod to knock the bearings out without
damage (keep the rod on the very edge of the bearing race). To re-
install, I usually use a piece of wood to set on top to the
race/bearing, then tap the top of the wood with a hammer to drive
the race into the hub.

Rear Wheel Bearings

Post by RonMGTC@aol.com » Tue Jun 07, 2005 11:15 pm

Does anyone have a source of rear wheel bearings for a TC, Moss seems to have them on permanent back order?

Also, I seem to recall that there are "good" and "bad" ones, something to do with the number of bearings in the race I think.

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron,
SKF-6208-2RS is a direct replacement for the TA/TC rear wheel bearing. This
bearing is factory lubricated and has two seals to keep the lubrication in
the bearing. it is a 9 ball version and OK for street use.
SKF-M208-2RZ is also a direct replacement . It has 12 balls, factory
lubricated and sealed, and is a heavier duty version. More expensive. Good
for racing.
I think there might be an even better bearing, ( SKF-Q208 ? ) that is a
split inner race bearing but I think these are hard to find. Roger F. may
know more.

There are no "good" or "bad" ones, they all work just fine. I know a TC
racer who has used the SKF-6208 bearing for 8 years, doing 6 or 8 events a
year, and never had a problem. He does have my tapered axles and taper bored
hubs installed. If the rear hub to axle joint is TIGHT the wheel bearing
takes a lot less load as the inner carrier bearing and axle shaft helps to
keep the wheel vertical. Poor joint fit and the wheel bearing tries to keep
the wheel vertical and it was never designed for this load.

hi Ron - perhaps Moss don't have any competent people since Chris Nowlan
left...

These bearings should be no problem whatsoever, they are metric (as so much
else on our cars!) and very easy to find (at least in Olde England!). "Max
load" type (12 or 13 balls, replacement for the original brgs specified) is
M208. "cheap as chips" version (9 balls) is 6208. Nowadays we recommend
shielded (and greased for life) brgs, just add 2Z, ZZ, or 2RS to the brg.
no.

It goes without saying that I always have a good selection in stock, but
postage across the pond would be excessive...

One of my next projects will be to manufacture axle case ends, which will be
capable of taking double row brgs. (MGB type). They will be useful for
anybody with a badly damaged axle case, or for converting MGA axles (the
next project).

ocTagonally

TCRoger, Devon, olde England, where is is now hot (well, 20C, its all
relative) and sunny.

Ron:

I have them in both sealed and unsealed style. 127-500.
