Castrol R

Hi Tweed, I read somewhere of a some Army chaps in North Africa during the war who hightened their motor-racing reminiscing by burning off some Castrol R in a mess tin placed on a fire. They would all sit down-wind sniffing at the heady fumes. I'm sure "Health and Safety" would ban such activities now, or insist that "gas masks" should be worn. It's all very well putting some in the petrol, but only those behind you will benefit. Regards, Eric. -----Original Message----- ...Ahh that smell!.... Back when a 500 Goldie with clip-on`s was King of the Road we used to put a drop in the petrol.... actually got pulled over by a copper for it cos he thought it was a `silly thing to do`.... he would no doubt have swapped it for the Speed Twin he was on though.

A number of years ago I attended a MMM annual meeting in the UK with my wife. They ran a rally and I was a passenger in Mike Allison's N type. My wife Barbara was a passenger in Roger Thomas's 4 seater. The rally was held in a rural area on one lane (single carriageway) roads, the kind where your car brushes against the hedge rows on both sides. Mike Allison drove down these lanes at breakneck speeds. He was way in front of the other cars and out of sight. My wife Barbara told me after the event that they were able to follow, by stopping at all forks and intersections and then deciding which way to go by following the scent of the Castrol R from Allison's car. As a boy growing up in Paterson New Jersey (the home of the original Gasoline Alley) My father took me to the midget races at the city stadium. I really don't remember much about the races, but I vividly remember the smell of the Castrol R like it was yesterday. I am told that our sense of smell has a longer and more accurate memory retention then our other senses. Back in New England, I used to run Castrol R in my walk-behind lawn mower just to make the chore of grass cutting bearable. Here in New Mexico, I don't have grass anymore thus totally eliminating that mixed blessing. So Badger, have you come out of winter hibernation (have not heard from you in a while)? Since you have no grass to mow now, how goes your TC chassis project? Any updates? David Edgar, TC 5108 El Cajon, California
