Peter-
I am writing to report that I have completed the color matching process for
the grey-green on the scuttle of my March 1948 production TC. I took the color
sample from the underside of the tool box lid. I do not purport that this is
the definitive color that would apply to all deep scuttle TC's but rather that
this color is appropriate for at least one batch of scuttles that were used
in March 1948. I was hoping that I could use a "stock" formula, but in the end
it took a good bit of fettling to get the color spot on. The formula is as
follows for Matrix System (PPG Brand) paint :
MT84 White - 337.2
MT83 Black - 290.9
MT66 YellowLF - 74.7
MT78 Green - 15.4
MT65 YellowLF - 18.8
MT89 - Top Off
This formula is for one quart. The cost was $59 for an un-reduced quart.
My first choice would have been for acrylic lacquer due to its ease of
application and repairability. Due to EPA restrictions this is not a viable option
in the US. This formula is for a base coat - clearcoat enamel. Again, not my
first choice but I had to work with what is readily available.
I hope this helps to move your restoration one step further along.
Best regards,
Jim Dougherty

Re: TC early to mid-production scuttle color
I just bought a quart of lacquer a few weeks ago..in Forest Green for
another car.
It is easy to use, but not so good if you spill fuel on it, as the modern
stuff is chock full of stuff that messes up the paint.
Best,
Ray
