TC Windshield question

Post by Viv James TraX Interconnect (Pty.) Ltd » Thu May 16, 2002 7:11 am

Charles, I made a template for my black TC's windscreen and subsequently tried it against 4 others. They were all markedly different. I just had a new glass cut for my cream car and fitted it 3 weeks ago with all new brackets and hood pins, using the Moss rubber. It was really hard to get the fit correct and no ways could I have done it if I'd copied an original Triplex glass shield that I had borrowed from a friend. This was too wide and the upper curve was different and different again was the template from the black TC. If I were you, I'd take a piece of scrap plywood or similar and make a template that fits your actual frame and bracket set up. Remember to the allow for rubber thickness and the wiper motor wire. Also make sure that the screw lengths are correct. If you screw into the glass its back to square one. Use dish washing liquid on the rubber so that it slip in easily!! Cheers Viv

IMHO I have always avoided the use of "washing up "liquid to lubricate rubber to metal parts as it contains traces of salt which can, when the liquid has dried, lead to the dreaded rust!!! Far better to use silicone spray/grease or KY jelly Regards Steve TC4219 -------------------- talk21 your FREE portable and private address on the net at http://talk21.btopenworld.com/redirect. ... om' Target='_new' Href='http://talk21.btopenworld.com/redirect. ... com> -------------------- talk21 your FREE portable and private address on the net at http://www.talk21.com

I sent the entire mess (broken glass plus frame), to the glass guys. Dunno if the glass was original, but it was laminated, and most of it was there. Screen fell right back together, glass guys had left all the proper reliefs for wiper motor and arm, etc. If your glass is still good, glass guys might be able to fix it; (grind, etc.). In any case, your incorrect old glass will guide them to do it correctly. Don TC 7993

"I started finding other things wrong. The reason it leaked wasn't only the seal, but the windshield itself was cut wrong. The bottom edge was very uneven and was barely inside the frame in a couple of places. No wonder it leaked. So the first thing will be to replace the windshield itself. I can get one cut locally, but I will need a pattern. Any ideas or suggestions?" _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

Charles One more thing, on your windshield, if you do not want it to leak, you need to put some windshield sealer on the seal (looks like clear silicon caulking). If you do not, after a period of time the seal will shrink, due to the sun, and it will work back into the groove some more, and then when you are driving in the rain, it will be among the many places that water is coming in, been there done that. Also are you going to be able to make it to GOF Central? Cheers Dean

Thanks everyone for the responses to my question both on and off the list. This is what this list is about. With the information I have received, I should have everything back together in a few day. If I had to struggle through on my own, it could take several weeks to get everything figured out and make a template for a new windshield. And probably have to have a couple made before I got it right. Its worth putting up with the off-topic stuff. Not nearly as offensive as all the spam about porn, increase your male/female size, accept credit cards, etc, etc, get out of jail free that I get in may email. Regards, Charles Hill
