wheel repair/straightening

Post by sculptart@aol.com » Sun Apr 21, 2002 3:59 pm

To all, I have told from a friend following my car that one of my wheels appear to be crooked. There is no rim damage, so I am going to try to straighten them...sort of like a motorcycle wheel I did many years ago. Has anyone attempted this with a TC wheel and have any helpful hints? I know I can send them out for this work to one of the suppliers, but I would like to do this myself and have the pride of a job well done. Thanks in advance for any help. My best, Ben, TC 4260

Ben
The most immediate problem is likely to be siezed spoke nipples. After removing the tyre/tube/rim tape go round each nipple in turn, heat to near red heat with an oxy torch, and try to turn it with the spoke key (I don't think that any regular spanner will fit) - while the nipple is still hot.
Once they're all free you can think about truing the wheel, same procedure as your motorbike wheel. Slacken outer spokes/tighten inner spokes (or viceversa) to move the rim sideways, and tighten both (or loosen both) to alter the roundness. Spin the wheel on a free hub and locate the high spots by holding a piece of chalk up close.
Good luck - you will need lots of patience.

Re: [mg-tabc] wheel repair/straightening Ben I just had a couple of wheels, which were a bit wobbly , straightened and re-spoked. The guy who did them has been doing this job for years(Birmingham UK) and said you can't straighten a bent rim on wheels of this sort by spoke tightening like you can with a cycle wheel. He strips out all the spokes, sticks the wheel in a hefty vice and crowbars it straight, then re-spokes. In my case, the result was excellent, two true wheels with nice tight spokes. BTW one of these wheels was so wobbly that when I fitted it once and drove the car, someone waved me down and said the wheel was coming off! Tony TC9825

Alan/ Ben The guys name is R Phillips Unit 6 Britannia Works Smethwick Birmingham U.K. 0121 558 5942 He charged 65 per wheel for a complete rebuild and straightening, which basically means bolt cropping all the existing spokes and then straightening the rim before re-building. His premises are Victorian, to say the least, but this is typical Black Country industry (for your information Ben, the Black Country is that area of Birmingham which was at one time probably the most dense area of industry in the world, presumably so called because of the amount of soot in the atmosphere. Pockets of these small industries still remain ) With a deviation of only 5mm I guess you may be able to do something with your wheel, mine was considerably worse than that and beyond self repair I think. While on the subject of wire wheel rebuilding, where can I buy stainless steel spokes and nipples for my TC? I tried contacting British Wire Wheel in California via eamil seveal times and never received a response back. I too would like to redo my own wires and am considering the stainless route depending on cost. Thanks in advance, David Edgar, TC 5108 El Cajon, California

Hi, you might try giving Gary in New Zealand a call. He supplies wire wheels, builds them from scratch and repairs them, he also sells spokes and nipples. His site is: www.vintagerims.com . Regards, Hugh Pite

BWW is little more than an outlet store for Dayton. Dayton still repaints/rebuilds w/w, but BWW just sort of retails them. Best, Ray
