carb float bowl repair

Post by Robert Grunau » Fri Mar 22, 2002 6:30 am

Last Sunday I sent out a message asking for sourcing of a Helicoil type repair kit to repair a stripped 7/16 " -18 tpi BSF float bowl mounting thread on a TC carb. I received several informative replies and as a result telephoned Uni-Thread in the UK Monday morning. They were very helpful, I ordered the kit and some extra inserts and gave my Mastercard number. The parts were mailed Monday afternoon, UK time. I received the kit and inserts in my mailbox Thursday noon. Great service, nice looking kit, reasonable price, can't wait to try it out. I would recommend Uni-Thread. They have a catalogue, and can be reached at 44-1803-559595 if you need BSF and other taps, dies and repair kits. Bob Grunau --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Further to note below, I just repaired two stripped float bowl threads in two TC/TD #3478 carb bodies. One body was the original TC type of heavy dark casting, the other much lighter weight aluminum type. Normal length of thread on the uni-thread inserts in the kit is 1.5 X diameter. The hole in the body is quite short, so I ordered some inserts which are 1.0 X diameter. Sure enough, the 1.5 inserts are too long ( although I did use one and cut off the extra thread spiral ). The 1.0 inserts are the correct length. Repair of the two bodies took about 10 minutes ( 5 minutes each ). To test the repair I assembled a float bowl to the bodies and torqued the banjo bolt. I stopped at 25 ft-lbs torque on each body. The "feel" of the torque wrench was very positive using the Uni-thread repair insert. Much better than an un-repaired original tapped hole. Might be worth considering uni-thread repairing the tapped hole even if it is not stripped. I think the stainless steel insert would result in a stronger connection.
