I agree with Ian. I have used a large old Electric soldering iron with very large copper? tip to soft solder these brass screws onto the inside of the rad shell. I used 10/32 flat head brass screws, tinned the inside of the shell where the screw is needed, then set the screw into the tinning and heated the screw/tinning. Works for me. No indication on outside of shell that the soldering iron had been used.

I would NOT try a flame torch.

And I have not tried epoxy.

Anyone tried an epoxy fix?  Any favorites like good old JB Weld?  Any other ideas/suggestions?  I d like to get rid of the tie wraps holding the slats together

I have been able to soft solder these the original way without damaging the chrome.

Bob,

On my car the bracket at the bottom of the shell which hold the centre bars of the frame the slats fix to has broken away. I have several soldering irons and could solder it back on but my feeling is why take a chance of making the chrome have a blue spot, epoxy resin will hold it better than solder and no risk.

I had my shell repaired and rechromed several years ago and unfortunately the lower center peg came away.  I have glued it a couple of times with JB Weld, but it has not held for long.  Perhaps you will have better luck.Steve TC2911 From: "'Norman Verona' norman@frenchblat.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: grunau.garage@sympatico.ca; i.thomson@talk21.com; 'Yahoogroups' mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 6, 2017 9:16 AM Subject: RE: [mg-tabc] Radiator slats   Bob,  On my car the bracket at the bottom of the shell which hold the centre bars of the frame the slats fix to has broken away. Steve,

When we moved to France 12 years ago I noticed a small drip from the corner of the fuel tank on the Caterham. The strap had rubbed a pinhole in the bottom right corner. I patched it with some Araldite epoxy resin after thoroughly cleaning the area. It s still like that and leak free.

I ve bonded many things with it over the years and, as long as both surfaces are clean and oil free you d need to chisel the parts apart.

I had my shell repaired and rechromed several years ago and unfortunately the lower center peg came away.  I have glued it a couple of times with JB Weld, but it has not held for long.  Perhaps you will have better luck.

Bob,

On my car the bracket at the bottom of the shell which hold the centre bars of the frame the slats fix to has broken away. I have several soldering irons and could solder it back on but my feeling is why take a chance of making the chrome have a blue spot, epoxy resin will hold it better than solder and no risk.

Norman

Epoxy will hold on a fuel tank but the lug for the bolt for the radiator shell is under constant vibration.

Epoxy will break away. Using an electric soldering hammer will not affect the chrome plating.

A small electronic soldering tool will not do the job.

Clean the surfaces and apply soldering acid, then apply a layer of lead on both parts heat then together and the job is done.

Benny,

It’s not the lug, it’s the two small plates that hold the frame for the rad grill strips.

Steve,

Some metals, e.g. alum., yellow metals are hard to reliably bond with epoxy. The reason is that these metals, even though cleaned & abraded well to produce a keyed bright metal surface, they will instantly oxidize on cleaned surface, and this degrades the bond.

The trick is that once the bonding joints are reasonably clean:

1.) One must further abrade the bonding area using catalyzed epoxy on 80 grit sandpaper, course wet/dry sand paper, or a wire brush, abrade, through wet epoxy technique . By cleaning metal under wet epoxy, air is prevented

from being exposed to air, and compromising the otherwise bright surface, eliminating possibility of exposure to instantaneous oxidation . .

2.) For unusual, or complex bonding applications some prefer an acid wash prep. This product (West Epoxy # 860) has been off the market for a while & can be hard to find.

Yes my gas tank sender is sealed up with JB weld and I rebuilt the corroded thermostat housing with the same. I suspect the vibration of the grill and radiator shell may be more than JB can withstand although it does work for awhile.Steve From: Norman Verona norman@frenchblat.com> To: 'Stephen D The strap had rubbed a pinhole in the bottom right corner. I patched it with some Araldite epoxy resin after thoroughly cleaning the area. It s still like that and leak free.  I ve bonded many things with it over the years and, as long as both surfaces are clean and oil free you d need to chisel the parts apart.    Norman Verona11 Cherry Close, Royston, South Yorkshire S71 4LZPhone: 0044 (0)1226 728811Mob: 0044 (0)741 9905 741Web: www.frenchblat.com  From: Stephen D Stierman [mailto:morgan7709@sbcglobal.net] Sent: 06 December 2017 15:38 To: Norman Verona norman@frenchblat.com>; grunau.garage@sympatico.ca; i.thomson@talk21.com; 'Yahoogroups' mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] Radiator slats  I had my shell repaired and rechromed several years ago and unfortunately the lower center peg came away. Thanks, everyone, for the replies.  I did a test today using the largest of my two Weller soldering guns.  I tried to create a small pool of solder down at the bottom of the shell where it wouldn t be noticed.  I just couldn t get it really hot enough to create a good bond and that s without adding the screw.  Maybe if I did this in the summer and could preheat the shell out in the sun.  I think the kitchen oven is out of bounds.  I really need a big old fashioned iron as used by the stained glass folks but I don t and don t know anyone that does.   I ve gone the JB Weld route for now.  We ll see how it goes over time.  It s so much fun pulling the radiator I can t wait for it to fail again.  I ll keep my tie wraps handy.   Dave TC 0524 .

It's grill slats, not radiator. Am I getting too picky ?

I agree with Ian. I have used a large old Electric soldering iron with very large copper? tip to soft solder these brass screws onto the inside of the rad shell. I would NOT try a flame torch.

And I have not tried epoxy.
