I have used a piece of plate glass and 1000 grit wet or dry paper and leveled both surfaces. I have never had a leak that way. Sandy

That's why the use of silk thread instead of a gasket or anything like a copper wire, etc. Silk thread is light weight to start out, and upon assembly it squeezes to one or two ten-thousandths at the most, but will provide a physical "tight spot" to better stop any potential oil leakage. It's used in split engine cases where the main bearings are line bored into the case - any significant thickness there increases main bearing clearances, which are more critical than end float in an oil pump. The mating surfaces do indeed need to be lapped and should seal just fine dry or with a light dressing - it's just a final bit of insurance. I am going to install the oil pump on the XPAG engine. According to the books there is no gasket

between the cover and the body of the pump. Dose someone had problems of oil leakage from the cover?

What about the usage of a thin layer of modern sealant (Locktite?) between the cover and the body?

You might be able to do it on a flat plate of glass with fine valve grinding paste. Benny, I recently asked the same question and the answer is *No*.  You should be able to lap, in a figure 8 motion, the surface of the cover smooth using successively fine sandpaper grits (I started at 800 and finished at 2000).  Use copper washers under the bolts and you'll be leak free.
