Yep, just take it off and have a friend do it.

the ultimate farkle......
I am surprised that no one is producing metal "plastics" replacements for the KLR. No one with sheet metal experience has tried to forge light metal covers to replace the garanteed-to-fade, and break, plastics? Sure, there would be an investment in making the plates, but stamping out copies would be cost effective. And, I bet that we Farkle addict's would buy them. Anyone?

Honestly, I'd rather have the plastic ones. Sure they fade, but plastic bends and returns to it's original shape, whereas metal will bend and stay bent. Once metal bends it's extremely hard to get it back to it's original condition. RyanPhoenix

There are internet photo's of the KLR GS650 that has some very handsome side panels that are polished aluminum. It may be in a thread called WheatWackerMod or something like that. The thread is about cutting the gen1 cowl and pushing it forward, supported by added side-plates to achieve a Dakar looking cowling m1.

Seems to me that 3D printing the plastic mesh inserts would be a well received farkle.
