differences between pre-2008 and 2008+ rear shock

Post by nakedwaterskier » Fri Feb 19, 2016 7:24 pm

I am using a 2010 shock on my 2004 KLR650.  Works great esp. since I am using an Eibach spring that corresponds to my weight and riding.

Wheres your commanding KLR soldier?
Blown up sir!
Not only did it score the exaust cam journal but it actually cracked one. Pictures to follow.  I need an 08 or newwer head to replace the horktificated one. I will also need new cams. Going 685cc I guess although the cyl looks of. It is a bit out of round but nothing that wont bore out.
I see new heads are close to a grand. Anybody have a crash?
If I ebay one from someone off list I run the risk of getting an oil starved one with a gauled exaust cam journal. Can that be fixed?

You can have a machine shop weld up and re-bore the cam journals.   But many machine shops lack the equipment and skills to weld the journals and the re-ground journals won't likely match the precision of the work.

Plus it's bound to be costly.

Better to find a used head with good cam journals.   If you can't find a lister with a  spare head,  ask prospective eBay sellers to shoot a close-up picture of the cam journals with the cam caps off so you can evaluate the journals' condition.

If you are doing the 685 you may as well do the oversized vales too,  I got more horsepower increase from the OS valves than I got from the additional displacement.   Also the stock valves are soft with a hard nitride coating.   The valves can't be ground without grinding off the  coating.

I can t find the message, but someone in SoCal had that done. I believe they had them ground larger and installed sleeve bearings in the journal.

I ll keep looking around.

Don't know what happened to my post a few minutes ago but this is what I posted to Christopher. Christopher, Check with http://www.enginedynamics.com/services.shtml for head repair. I've read a number of posts with good reviews of their work on KLR heads with damaged cam journals. A recent post mentioned they quoted about $225 for a repair. I think they line bore and make a bushing to fill the gap. I think it is a bronze bushing but I'm only guessing. No matter who does the repair, know the installed valve height is critical as is the position of the cam. If the valves are installed too high (deep in the seat) you won't have much room for adjustment as shims only go to about 225 if I recall correctly. If the cam position is too high or low it will also affect cam timing and valve adjustment. If you go with a different head... a Gen I KLR650 head will also bolt up but you will not have a port for the AIS (air injection system) for emissions. Many owners remove the AIS but if you want to keep yours you are stuck with using a Gen II head.
