heated grips

Post by jirvine@nmsu.edu » Mon Oct 02, 2000 9:44 am

Installed the kimpex grip heaters yesterday. 90 degrees out but that will change. I get these from Dennis Kik, $30 delivered plus a standard relay ($4), some wire, connectors, and solder and in this case new grips. Done this one 2 previous bikes. Still took me quite a while and i need to go back and add the fuse in line. The kit consists of two heating elements that self adhere to the grip once the old are removed. Kawasaki sure know how to glue grips on. I mounted the relay on the rear fender and that seems to work well, short wires to both end of the battery and one to a wire that allows the relay to only work when the key is on therefore saving one from a possible dead battery from forgetting to turn off the grips when parking. I cut into a red/white wire that runs to I believe the tail light, hot only when the key is switched on. I have the switch mounted under the speedo, right now with velcro which may be OK but I may glue it in place with goop, easy to remove but secure. One power wire runs from the relay up under the tank to connect to the grips. All of it come out clean by careful routing and a few cable ties. I soldered all the connections. be sure to leave extra wire length on the throttle side. Tested then briefly this AM and both high and low seem to work fine. Now to hook up the electric vest and laugh at cold weather!

heated grips

I am planning on installing heated grips on my A14. I would like to hear from anyone who is currently using grips or under the grip heaters. I am probably going to go with www.hotgrips.com and use a Heat-troller thermostat but I would like to here from the list. I am currently using an Aerostitch vest (45W) and the grips are approx. 32W on high so there should be no charging problems with both items. Thanks, Dana E Hager Nazareth, PA

I have used the hot grips as well as the Kimpex grips, I am using the Kimpex right now on my BMW, I was going to do the same on the new KLR but after trying the heated gloves I would never waste my money on the grips again. But in my opinion the kimpex are better than the Hot Grips especially because you cause a set of real grips on top of them, the hotgrips are as hard as rocks to hold onto and when the wiring going to the throttle side breaks (it will eventually) you have to replace the entire grip and since you must epoxy the grips onto your throttle sleev you probably will end up replacing that as well. Has anybody out there used the velcro type that aerostitch sells? John 01 KLR 650 81 R100s

A frind had them and IMHO they sucked, I really like the kimpex. I use then with summer gloves down to freezing and then a heavier glove below that. That is on my XX where the hands are more exposed.

For fifteen years I've been using (and prefer) metal-cartridge heating elements which are placed inside the handlebar. Additional handlebar weight and no external wires. Now marketed under the name Polly and available from Dennis Kirk. $28.99 for dual element, 13.99 for single. Clint

Someone said that they were not having any problems with the archive search. Did I miss something? I am trying to use the archives at: http://www.listquest.com/lq/search.html?ln=klr650 It does not work. Is there another way to search the archives? If so, the link on the eGroup "Links" page for the archives should be changed. Thanks in advance, Joe P.S. I was looking for comments on installation and use of stainless steel break lines.

I have some grip heaters to install on my KLR. They are the ones with the heating elements in a thin tape that you wrap around the bars and then slip whatever grips you have over them. I have a Renthal aluminum bar on the bike. Should I try to further insulate the heating elements from the bar by first wrapping on some electrical tape or something? Any other advice about installing these? Thanks.

Yes. I have these on two bikes and they work pretty good, but the left side needs a couple of wraps of electrical tape, as it acts like a big heat sink. Right side is fine due to the throttle sleeve. Tom Roper '98 Concours '02 KLR 650 Mo. Subject: [DSN_klr650] heated grips
