doohickey spring end

Post by Paul Whatley » Thu May 29, 2014 3:58 pm

I understand and it wasn't taken as such. I sent the pic so you could confirm it for the subject matter expert / skeptic. From: "mark ward nomad59@... My Doo was ok but the spring was shot. On Thursday, May 29, 2014 3:56 PM, "'GMac999' gmac999@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
When I got my '95 the first thing I did was change the doohickey. The previous owner had never adjusted it. When I pulled the cover off and loosened the bolt, it fell off. It had split in half where it goes around the shaft. Both the old style, pre-2007 and the new, upgraded sintered metal ones in the post-2007 models. A majority of the pre-07 s were bad welds, but I have two that the outer portion of the adjuster was totally missing. I replaced my first doohickey in 2001 and I have sponsored 30 or so Tech Days at my office/shop. I think that I qualify as somewhat experienced, although not as experienced as some, Jeff Saline comes easily to mind. On May 29, 2014, at 11:33 AM, Paul Whatley pwhatfourever@... doohickey spring end

Post by GMac999 » Thu May 29, 2014 5:57 pm

Mine the spring was still in one piece. I put Eagle Mike s kit in there and needed the medium spring. Since then he s come out with the torsion spring, which I now have waiting to install.

OH I wasn't questioning you, it was total sarcasm towards the guy that said NEVER, yet also never said he has ever had a KLR., and others like him. with NO experience, yet have lots of OPINIONS, they believe is KNOWLEDGE.

I told him, I have talked to people THAT HAVE A KLR all the time, that did have a bad D.H.

My Doo was ok but the spring was shot.

doohickey spring end

Post by mark ward » Thu May 29, 2014 7:12 pm

As I said, I was being sarcastic, do to someone with NO experience, saying never. I agree CHANGE THEM even IF Kaw gets there act together and makes a strong DH. they will most likely leave in the CRAPPY springs. Crappy as in bad, not the fish I like going after. Post by libertyeagle » Thu May 29, 2014 8:12 pm

I agree with Jeff, about 200 miles and it is get gas or hit reserve. I ride hard, carry lots of stuff. Michael ---In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, wrote : I usually have to go to reserve at about 200 miles, however I ride pretty hard most of the time.

So your explanation makes perfect sense, especially now understanding that gas flows only under vacuum. I filled my tank last night when I had 210 miles on the trip odometer.  Thanks much for the explanation. Will probably order that magnetic drain plug from you shortly. As a newbie I was surprised when that happened at 238 miles and thought my recently purchased trusty 2006 steed was failing me. I switched to reserve but it did not start easily. I may have flooded it too. I then read on the group that one member normally hits reserve between 240 and 245 miles. Who knew 20% of your fuel remained in reserve?
