On most bikes even if your shift lever breaks chances are you can get it into a better gear by hand. 2nd or 3rd is a good choice. In a pinch vise grips make an ok shift lever.

Look for the after market lever that has the metal pad at the tip to protect the engine casing. This strikes me as an exceptionally good idea.

Got new size 14 1/2 Sidi boots (nice). Now I can't get my toes under the stock shift lever. (I've got bum feet, but can shift semi-OK with soft athletic shoes). This doesn't look like something I can grow into. The toes simply are nowhere near able to catch the shifter tip. Have to shift with heel, which isn't that bad on the road, but... I think it might be wiser to fix the shifter than to ride with soft shoes. i see that the IMS is 3/4 inch longer than stock. That might help, but I also see other shifters with a built-in pad thingy to help protect the case behind it. I imagine changing the angle of the shifter on the spline might help, too. Looking for suggestions... Thanks much, TOD (The Other Doug)

I had the same problem with my size 14 Alpinestars and the stock and dualstar shifters. I went to the IMS shifter plus I cut the first rung off my left IMS footpeg. Seems to work OK now. HTH Randy from Burbank --- Douglas Bouley wrote:

Sorry, can't help with the foot sizing, I'm only a 10 1/2.

Which shifters have this? I know the Dual-Star does. I know the Moose and IMS folding shifters have the pad? Curious on what was the best a/m shift lever to get. Tony

I don't think the IMS has the pad, but the picture I've seen isn't the greatest. The Dual Star one has what looks like a pair of wings on it, but don't know if it is longer, like the IMS. H-T sells one by McDonalds Products that has really nice looking pad on the back. Again, not sure about the length, though. If I had 10 1/2s, I'd be looking at the H-t/McDonalds lever, but... I'm curious, too, and still researching. Doug

I doubt it, since those wings look like they fit into the semi- circular rebated area in the side cover.

Multisurfacemotorcycling.com sells the same, and neither company gives any indication that it is longer than stock, so I'd guess that it's stock length. (How's that for definitive? :-)

I'm a 10 or 11 depending on the boot; Sidis fit fine at 45 (Eur). I'm planning on getting a pair of MX boots in a couple of months, and I want to upgrade the shift lever, so I'll probably be able to answer the question in a while. -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)

I bought the Dual Star shifter because the stock one was digging a huge groove in my casing. The "wings" solved that problem. Saved me big bucks in future repairs. I ride with 11 1/2 Alpine Star Tech 6's. My boots clear fine after moving the shifter up a few notches.

Well, I never got the definitive word on the relative lengths, but there can't be too much difference, given the space they fit in. So I went with what looked the prettiest to me: the H-T one has the nicest looking pad to protect the case. How's that for science? Re the big- foot part, i will see what I can do with a few notches on the spline and/or a bit of work on the new foot pegs I have on order. Maybe I'll take an inch or two of my left foot... at least it would fit better in my mouth that way...

I ordered an a/m shifter from H-T, but while waiting for it, I raised the stock lever up about 3 clicks on the spline. Works pretty well now just by doing that. I have an unusally fat (top to bottom) left "street" shoe d/t custom frankenstein footware. Even with those huge shoes, the lever works much better with that simple change. I am still going to put the H-T shift lever on when it comes to protect the case a little. But the short answer is that I worry too much! Doug - who always looks for the expensive way out.
