I was going to explain that it was your attitude which was the problem with your fuel mileage until I read that you're 6'2" and 225 pounds...... Seems to me that the problem is whatever you say it is, sir. (VBG) 5'8", 165 pounds, Norm --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! - Internet access at a great low price. Tom, I get AT LEAST 20km/L, and usually closer to 26 - 28 kms/L when I travel at 100 - 110 kmph INDICATED, even w/ bags and duffel bag. Ed near Calgary PS I modded my reserve so I get more. Even since then I can go 260 to 320 kms BEFORE reserve, then at least 170 kms.

I'm riding a new KLR and getting 19K during my break-in period. I expect it will get better with wear, but drop slightly when I open the idle circuit a little. Hoppy

I was simply blown away by my fuel mileage figures of late on my revamped KLR650. I had notice I was over 250 miles on a tank without hitting reserve yet. So, yesterday, I decided to check mileage on the old gal. 4.9 gallons of Plus at 3.66 a gallon for the last 268 miles. 54.7 mpg is just fine with me. Course, this to tooling at a relaxed pace down back roads , both sealed and gravel, usually running at 40 to 55 mph. Shifting at no more than 4000 rpm 90% of the time. I would love to see Kawasaki put fuel injection on this bike. But, then , I might be tempted to buy a new one. ;-) Andy in Louisiana

My 2008 with 3,500 miles on the clock gets 59 MPG shifting at about 3,000 RPM. -----Original Message-----

fuel mileage

I was tooling around Saturday, which was arguably the most beautiful day of the year for a ride in these parts, and made an interesting fuel observation. The bike I was riding typically goes to reserve at about 125 miles, but on this tank, despite spirited riding through the hills and dales of SW Wisconsin, I didn't hit reserve till 150 miles. Hmmm. That evening I recalled that I had filled the tank in Prescott, WI using "pure gasoline" rather than the 10-percent ethanol blend we get in MN. That pure gasoline seems to have about 20 percent more energy than MN corn-gas. -- Kevin Powers White Bear Lake, MN [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Andy-- 54.7mpg? That is a great number, however--You are a piker. smile. I got 58.6mpg (best ever) last week riding Black Hills canyons; never was over 55mph and most of it was closer to 35-45. That 58.6 was the best ever. That was using GPS measured miles...and big smiles even at the slower speeds. Which brings up the point: if you have to stretch the fuel, whatever 5th gear at 3.5-4,000 rpms will probably give you max range--in my experience. That gas mileage last week was an eye opener--entirely different from a previous historical data point: Three years ago when I was riding the 1998-20,000 mile new-to-me-bike home to South Dakota from Dallas, TX--often with near 50mph head winds or at least a significant side vector, I got as little as 35 mpg in Iowa while trying to hold 65-70mph. I think I hit reserve at ~155 miles; I was pretty sure I was going to play push-the-pig before reaching a gas station. With the wind beating me, and the gas consumption much higher than expected, I felt like a tattered flag limping along at 4K rpms for 25+ miles until I found a gas station. and no, I was not picky about the brand of gas at that point.... revmaaatin.
