2001 klr will not run

My KLR will start with out the choke but is spewing gas out the overflow tube. Can this be resolved without seeking service on the bike? The bike recently sat for about three weeks and the problem surfaced after that dormant period. Also, the gas in the tank is new within a month. Any suggestions would be of assistance. Turn the petcock off, start the engine and let it run until it stalls. This will empty the carb bowl and should let the float drop. Take a screwdriver and give the carb bowl a few taps with the handle. This should let the float bowl drop if it is stuck and also possibly dislodge any crap that may be stuck in the needle. Turn the petcock back on and see if it is fixed. If not repeat a couple times until it works or you give up and realize it is more serious (should not be though). Mike, It sounds like you have a stuck float. The spewing fuel is coming out the 'overflow' hose. Just like it was designed to do. You might just have a particle under the float needle seat. You can test this 'theory' by turning off the gas while the bike is idling and see if the overflowing fuel stops. = using up the excess fuel in the bowl until you run out of gas. Occasionally, you can clear a stuck float by taping on the carb where the enters. The handle of a large screw driver usually will work. After the bike runs out of gas, remove the drain plug. It is on the bottom of the fuel bowl of the carburetor. 3mm hex I think. or 4mm. Place a rag (white preferably) where the fuel is going to drain. With the plug removed, crank the bike. NOTE: do NOT look directly at the drain hole when you crank. some bikes will really squirt the fuel. Some just dribble.... Get a pretty good squirt of fuel on to the cloth and check for sediment; you are flushing the bowl as well as well as flushing the float needle seat. You might try tapping the carb at the same time near where the fuel enters the carb. (lightly--don't beat it!) Look on the white rag for 'junk' or sediment. Replace the float bowl screw. Restart the bike and see if that cleared the problem. Repeat if necessary. Once will usually clear the gunk/particle. It does not take much to cause a problem.... Otherwise, you will likely have to remove the carb and check the float level. Check your manual for 'how-to'. revmaaatin.

Add a fuel filter to the line, especially if you find sediment 'cause there may be more still in the tank. I have the 3mm allen wrench in the tool kit, it will drop the float bowl as well as open the drain. If it still won't behave you might need a new float needle, I had issues with that after the D2D rally in 09 and that's what fixed my float bowl problem. It looked fine but replacement was the only successful repair.
