Competition is always good. Perhaps this will speed up the production line at Sagebrushmachine a notch. I have one questions- In your opinion, why is stainless steel better? Most grades of stainless are not as strong as a good tool steel, and the Sagebrush hardened 4130 doohickey is a good bit harder than that. It's living inside a 200deg oil bath, why stainless? How does the Zen spring differ from Jake's? Or are you saying that's it's much better than the stock spring? Karl A14

Speaking of which, the pics they have up for the "two" different type of levers is wrong... Their pic of the pre1996s is really only valid for A1's and A2's, my A5, stock, had a weldment like every other year. Nothing big. And speaking of using SS inside an oil bath, perhaps thats why their kit costs $65?? Z

Why would someone choose a 37mm spring or a 40 mm spring (their order form forces you to choose)? Kurt

There is now another source for the famous eccentic adjustment plate - doohickey - made of a different material (IMHO better), that comes with a MUCH better spring than has been available before. check out http://www.fayettemotorcycles.com/fayette-motorcycles/ go to Zen motorcycle products. happy Friday! doohickey

When I bought my main KLR 2 years ago I panicked and went for a new Doohicky. The bike had had a rough life so I assumed it was going to grenade any minute because it had 16,000 miles on it. So I bought the new part numbered parts from KHI. I got a new doohichy and spring and washer and adjuster bolt and even went for new gaskets. Everything was fine in the motor. It was all still working and there was a lot of adjustment left but I replaced it all anyway and the new doohickey was a little stouter as was the spring. The washer under the adjustment bolt helped to spread the load better. So I buttoned it up and I adjust it regularly. I let other people ride this bike and I am about to let my wife practice on it after she finishes her MSF course. SO at 23,500 miles it still purrs and has not Sploded@!!!!! This morning I want ed to go for a ride. I suited up and fired up this bike and took off. About a mile from home I stopped at a stop sigh and then proceeded. Before I could shift to 2nd it died. Just dead. I stopped and fiddled but it was starting to sprinkle so I coasted and walked it home. Took all the body work and tank off and pulled the plug. I have spark,,,,,I have gas....I have compression...hmmmmmm. So I blow on the vent tube to the carb and fiddle around with other stuff. Then it fires and idles fine after a minute. Crap in the carb. I drained the bowl and blew through the vent again and all is well.....I guess it didn't want to leave the house today.I Had pulled the carb a while ago and cleaned it all up and installed filter in line but still some thing got in. Great idea, Russell - wait until she breaks!!! My '99 imploded in the desert in the Baja last spring (10,000 mi.) took out the tranny, and the head, plus I had a nice time getting me and the bike back to Canada. At the time, the "doohickey" issue was a lot smaller, and I wasn't aware of the problem. Now, we are all aware of the problem, and we know how catastrophic a failure can be, but, if you choose to ignore it, I assume you are over the age of 21! Murray Dochstader B.C. Canada. Pete: I think you have hit the proverbial "nail - on - the - head" with your observations, especially with respect to the spring. It was never intended to be part of the actual tensioner - it is there to reposition the doohickey when the adjuster bolt is loosened. When my motor lunched (last March), Jake's doohickey was available, but there was no aftermarket spring, so I used a Kaw. spring, and I have had no problem with it, presumably, because Jake's doohickey leaves no slack in the system when it is adjusted properly. Hopefully Mother Kaw. is lurking on this list and will address this important (and cheap for them to fix) problem. Murray Dochstader B.C. Canada. When I buy my bikes, do I make the dealer put in a aftermarket doohickey? What should he charge for doing this? If I don't have this done, can I count on seizing up? Should I buy extended warranty? Thanks to everyone for the info.

No, do it yourself.

Moot

Not "count on seizing up" but the odds are you'll need to replace it sooner or later, effects of failure vary from a noisy balancer chain to total engine failure.

I didn't, some do. Matter of opinion.
