'oil 'weight' error - a problem
Ron,
I suggest you don't use the 30 weight. If it was mine I'd drain it right
now and start again.
The KLR oil compartment is a tough environment. It has an internal
combustion engine crankcase, a constant mesh transmission and a
multi-disk wet clutch. This really calls for three different lubricants
but that's not possible in this situation. I've done oil analysis about
6 times on my 2003 KLR650. One oil I used sheared to a 20 weight in well
less than 2,000 miles. That was from a 40 weight. I've finally
determined what works well for my KLR with my riding style and
conditions.
I don't think 30 weight will serve your engine well. The oil compartment
really doesn't care if you don't run hard or in the dirt if the lubricant
isn't working.
I will suggest if you decide to run with your current blend you will no
longer be able to claim "very well cared for" when talking about it.

Jeff, what was the oil that came out on top for you?
On a related topic, what do you use for your /6? I am curious as I have a 1975 R75/6.

'oil 'weight' error - a problem
I'm sure it's better to use only the best possible oil, changing religiously at the optimum moments, never mixing viscosity, brands, classifications or manufacturing dates (joke). However, in the real world where many of us reside on a daily basis this is not always possible. I change my oil as often as I can, usually (but not always) around 2000 miles. It's rare that I can find motorcycle-specific oil or trustworthy synthetic oil in the places I've been riding. Sometimes even multigrade takes some searching. The bike seems to survive just fine, so far. If I stressed every time I added some 10w-30 despite temps in the 90's or 100's, I'd have little energy left over to enjoy my travels.
I may pay for this, down the road. Maybe tomorrow, in fact. But at some point, you've got to make your peace with the fact that you didn't always do the absolute best thing possible for your bike. That's ok, right?
FWIW, I do not claim a flat "very well cared for" re my bike. I do say that I do the best I can under the circumstances, and I've noticed that this is better than some, worse than others. The bike itself seems to shrug off a certain amount of abuse, and that's one good reason (of many) to own a KLR, not a KTM.

'oil 'weight' error - a problem
I ran 40 wt during the summer. Even though I put thousands of miles on it, in cold fall weather the starter motor couldn't turn the thick oil. I topped up with thin Marvel Mystery oil before I got to the colder weather, it wouldn't turn. Finally I lit a fire under the engine and after awhile it started right up.

Barron,
I'm using Rotella Dino 15w/40 in my 2003 KLR650 with an oil change
interval of 1,750 smiles. My bike is normally geared with a 14/46
sprocket combo.
I've been using BMW 20w/50 in my 1975 R90/6 but with a new top end I'm
currently putting on it I'll probably see if I can switch to a something
weight/50 oil in Rotella dino if available or Castrol 20w/50. I was
talking to someone the other day and BMW 20w/50 is now about $8 a quart.
I'm not willing to pay that price.

'oil 'weight' error - a problem
Thanks for all the responses. They were running about 75/25 for 'OK vs.
Immediate Change'. Obviously the 'paranoid' {typically me} thing to do is
change it . . . NOW. The main reason for my hesitation was that the oil cost
$7.49/qt + tax.
Anyhow, about a day later I went in for something for the old Rodeo and
'needled them about 'screwing me' on the oil weight {more friendly then my
usual 'raging rant'}. Bottom line - the manager offered me FOUR quarts of MY
CHOICE . . . 'Would that be alright ?' . . . ABSOLUTELY !! I stayed with the
'Royal Purple'. He was out of stock, but got it from another store by the
next day.
Needless to say it took me longer to set-up and clean-up, then it did for
the actual oil change - didn't even have to change the filter.
I don't know about other locations, but I definitely give VERY HIGH marks to
my local {Glenside, PA} 'Advanced Auto'.
Regards & Thanks,

#ygrps-yiv-108093081 p {margin:0;}Every 1K???? WOW! I've heard of frequent oil changes but that takes the cake. I'd be changing my oil every month or maybe even less than that.
I use Castrol SynTec 20/50 at 3K increments.
