nklr anybody know the good/bad of yamaha xt 550?

A friend took one to Mexico with us last year. He had beefed it up with KTM suspension components. He had some ignition problems the morning after doing a river crossing, but other than that it was a great tool for the job. Kevin

derestricting question

Post by Col » Sat Jul 18, 2009 6:14 am

Col here from Lismore NSW Australia. I bought a new KLR650 a few weeks ago now, 09 model with 08 compliance plate, the black one. A very fun bike to ride and great value for money. The only mods I have done are to have the seat cut down by a local upholsterer to give me more stability when going slow or pulling up at the lights(5'9" tall). He did it in leather which was nice. My only (minor) criticism is how easily the rear plastic side panels mark and you can't seem to polish out any blemishes. They also lose their lustre when you try to clean them with some cleaning products. A quick question if I may, it had its first service last week, I asked the dealer to derestrict it for me by epoxying the holes in the carby slide, but he said they won't use that method in case a bit breaks off and will only derestrict by buying the new part, parts and labour coming to $300. Has anyone heard of the gluing method causing problems? Many thanks, Col

derestricting question

Epoxy which holes and why!!! Usually all that is done is to drill out the hole that feeds the vacuum chamber to a slightly larger size. I have to assume that something must have changed on the slide for compliance with emission regulation. Please elaborate. Alan Henderson A13 Iowa USA Col wrote:
