a unique solution to wind buffeting?

Post by LDHunter » Wed Jan 28, 2009 5:32 am

KLRistas, Some of you might remember my complaints about wind buffeting and wind turbulence noise on my '07 KLR650. I finally went with a tall Kawasaki brand windshield and a Laminar Lip on top of it and am moderately satisfied but always looking for ways to reduce wind turbulence noise in my helmet to protect what little hearing I have left. Yeah... Yeah.... I know... Wear earplugs but IMO they're a pain in the posterior and I get sick of fooling with them. I recently ran across this and thought I'd see if anyone has any experience with it. http://www.jacksflaps.com/# http://www.jacksflaps.com/> Watch the video. It may not apply to KLRs at all and I can't imagine how I could wear it outside of one of my riding jackets but my interest is piqued. Anyone tried one of these or have any observations or ideas? $bob$ [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Alan, Somehow, I believe this is a tall fabrication of KLR myth. Ontheotherhand, shrug, Please post a picture of that for us. and specify the angle of incidence for optimum aerodynamic 'lift'. revmaaatin. (Yeah, it did make me laugh.)

a unique solution to wind buffeting?

Wind buffeting is very annoying. I prefer either wide open (naked bike) or full fairing (Concours) type riding. However, the 2 bikes that I ride most often fit neither of my preferences. The KLR and ZRX both have little "bikini" cowls on them and unless you tuck yourself way down, you're gonna buffet and shake. At 60 MPH, stand up on your pegs and feel that clean air that's well above your screen. Don't let go of the handlebars while doing this. hotrodkawi wrote:

I'm with you. I usually run my KLR without any windshield with no problems for hours and hours. I have a handlebar type shield and I put it on sometimes but a truck coming the other way sometimes flattens it damn near. I cruise about 80 indicated on the KLR and the same on my Concours. The Connie is the winter rainy ride and the KLR is the summer dry ride. Criswell

Ok I get it..It's just not a problem for me as I'm only 5'9" and the kawasaki tall windshield seems to provide me enough protection from all the buffeting you guys seem to have. Happy trails, Rod PS riding 80 mph on a KLR seems to be a bit extream for me as well. I usually cruise at about 70. That seems to be another reason I don't have this problem. --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "roncriswell@..." wrote:

Nah ........ I have been riding it forever at 80 (indicated) at about 5200 rpm. It seems to love it and occasionally gets up to 85. I have done this even in the middle of summer at 104 degrees all day long. It now has 49.000 miles on the clock with no complaints. It is a '99. The wind doesn't bother me either. Criswell

Share this again: I went through 2 Clearview shields (tall) and after 5k-10k miles (?) ended up hating them. Heard that the Rifles perform about the same. They wobbled with the wind and produced horrible turbulence; they both ended up breaking, far from home ( Mexico) of course. Even tried them with the Saeng snake oil edging. My solution; A Slipstreamer CF30 handle bar shield used with the stock faring and shield. It's a little close to the face for some but doesn't bother me. Quiet, bug free (almost) ride. Comes off/on in 2/3 minutes when you want to go off road. Handling rock solid at all speeds. I cruise at 85 mph - - in complete comfort. I've done many 500+ mile days. My new to me '98 (2d KLR) that I picked up in Dallas TX last May had a nearly new, tall windshield. Never had ridden behind one, thought it would be nice--as I had removed the 'OEM' on my 01 4 years before because it nearly beat me to death. Fast forward at 70mph. Yes! The tall windshild (~14inches tall) kept the wind off!!! But oh, the noise! It sounded like a wind-tunnel roar at anything much over 45mph. The faster, closer to 70+, the noise just got louder and louder. 250 miles from home, after some 1000 miles of this abuse, I "rolled over" (=think, lkike a cowering dog, afraid of the beating to come) from the constant pain induced by the roar--removed it, slid it into a clean, cotton t-shirt and rode the rest of the way home with it tucked safely in my Givi top box. It has been sitting on my bench since the 5th of May. It will be for sale this spring. cough. about 1/2 price of new, etc. It did not work for me. shrug. works for some, just does not work for me. The best I have had so far--OEM faring without a windshield. To be fair to the windshild, it may have been a combination of windshield and displaced air striking my SyMax helmet (said to be noiser than some). I did not have another helmet to give that a try, but I did have a screwdriver and wrench--and as Goldlocks said, "It was just right" for the problem. Both KLR's sit quietly waiting in the frozen north, sans windshild, and not real likely to change their windshild status.... revmaaatin.
