motor weight?

what size carb jets for high altitude?

I will be traveling in So. America starting next month and will be as high as 10,000 to 14,000 feet. What size carb main jet is recommended for this altitude if I have a problem or will be at altitude for an extended time? Thanks

<><><><><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><><><><> Steven, You probably don't need any jet changes if your engine is running well now. The CV type carb is kind of self adjusting for altitude. But if you want to carry a jet just in case, you'll need to go down in size a tad. At higher altitude there is less oxygen in the same volume of air so less fuel is needed to have a proper air/fuel mixture. I'm not sure what size jet you have in the carb now but it could be good practice for you to learn how to get to the jet. While you are getting to it you could record the size and then get one or two sizes down from whatever you have in there now. Maybe more important than jet changes will be keeping your air filter clean and flowing well. I like a No Toil filter and find it works well and is easy to maintain using No Toil filter maintenance products. I climbed Pikes Peak(14110 feet) last spring on mine with the OEM jet in it...the thing ran great...just flew up the hill with no black smoke out the tailpipe or other symptoms of rich. There was a big trackhoe working up on top and he was belching the biggest cloud of black smoke you ever saw. I guess from that that diesels don't autoadjust for altitude?? Well whatever; I passed everything in sight on the way up. Ran great. There was a Harley sitting on the side of the road about 3/4 way up with 2 folks about 275# each sitting there on it...I wondered if the back cylinder was cooked in the thin air and with that load.
