I would definitely go the I-40 route and then be sure to hop off the freeway and do as much of the trip on route 66 as possible. Some of it is blighted and the road isn't perfect but there are plenty of gas and food stops and cheap motels and it is a piece of history. Or, you could even do a blue highway thing and stay off the freeways altogether. You meet more people and it's an entirely different experience then breakneck freeway driving. Just my experience and opinion and mostly based on my personal driving style (slow!) and generally no time commitments (retired). Sounds like a nice trip though. Have a great trip whichever route you take. James
