2008 klr-650 gas milage
I bought a 07 KLR 650 3 weeks ago and I finally had a chance to see how big is the gas tank and what not. I am very dissapointed because the tank is way smaller than the factory numbers. I waited till I had to use the reserve and it turns out the gas tank can hold only 4.65 galons. I am not sure how to do this but I filled it in till 1 inch from the gas cap. Even tilted the bike a little bit to see if there was some more room but nothing... So if the main tank is 4.65 and if the reserve is 0.9 as advirtesed then my tank is 5.55 galons. By the way how do you fill the reserve? When the switch is on if you put gas it goes to the main tank or it fills the reserve automatically? Or do I need to switch it to reserve and put some more gas?
In any case I made 192 miles till I hit the reserve. 4.65 galons 192 miles give me 42mpg. I rode the bike in town always under 4000rpm. I am very dissapointed because I was hoping to get 50-55mpg.

goes to the main tank You don't have to do anything special for the reserve - just fill it up. You DO want to make sure your petcock is set to ON and not RES. You don't want to run out of gas and look down and find your petcock on RES. If you run out of gas - you can lean the bike WAY over to the left and move the gas that sits on the lower right side over to the left. If your bike is new your mileage may get better after it's broken in, and you do your first maintenance... Jim>how do you fill the reserve? When the switch is on if you put gas it

"Reserve" is just a matter of a different length intake tube on the
inside of the tank. The "main" tank uses a long tube, when the fuel
level drops below the top of that tube it can no longer get fuel.
When you switch to reserve, you connect the fuel intake to the
shorter "reserve" tube inside the tank. The next time your tank is
close to empty, take a look inside and you should see both tubes. You
might need some light to do this...don't use a match and switch on
your flashlight away from the tank.
Your KLR's mileage will probably improve as the engine gets broken
in. I don't know where Kawi gets the 6.1 gallon figure, but I've
owned two KLRs and neither held more than about 5.5 gallons. Both got
45-55 mpg depending on riding conditions.

You can't estimate mileage with only one fillup unless you know for sure that the starting fillup was to the same level. Don't assume that it was. You don't have to do anything to fill the reserve, as it is all the same tank. The main gas feed is a tube that extends higher into the tank. The reserve feed is a tube that sits right near the bottom of the tank. Don't trust the advertised specs for *anything*. The only way to know for sure is to run out of gas and record your mileage. I did just that by getting a small gas can that I could safely strap to the back of the bike. If you are real nice we will tell you about the "super secret reserve". Also found in the FAQ. Oh hell, here is the info from the FAQ: Gas in the right side of the tank: Because of the gas tank design, even if you run dry on reserve, there will still be gas in the right side of the tank. To get at this gas in an emergency, tilt the bike over to the left as far as possible, and start riding again. You may be able to repeat this process a few times. This can be avoided by installing Skip Faulkner's fuel tank mod. -- Doug Herr doug@... Here is a photo of the stock petcock next to a Pingel. The reserve tube on
the stock petcock is not visible in this photo, it is hiding behind the
taller "main" tube. You can see that the Pingle provides a larger "main"
tank at the expense of a smaller reserve. The Pingel has two openings in
its single tube. The lower opening provides the reserve position.

Albatross, Your story makes my heart sing! sort-of... Could you wait until tomorrow to do the 134mph gig again? I'll be on duty 911 Aberdeen, SD and can use the 'work'. I hope that 134mph was a track speed...please tell us that it was...I recently hit 180+mph ground speed (50mph tail wind) in the helo, the return trip was not as much fun. revmaaatin. 911 Aberdeen, SD at 0700 31 May 07> > > albatross >

Would be great if I could say that, but would not want to lead you astray rev... But on a more sane note - I sold the bike and bought the KLR...
It would be a very long life-flight since I'm riding in NC..
