Check out the Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket. The removable waterproof liner works well for those summer rides when the weather changes. Zip in the liner and don a pile jacket and it is warm as toast. HIH Norm [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Vlad, Check out http://motoport.com/ Their gear is not the cheap way to go, but they did a demo at a Julian Tech Day this winter (fall??? - time goes by too quickly) and it looked like the best protection you can buy. The comparisons they did with materials from other gear showed the differences - pretty dramatic!!! According to motoport, Cop shops (no dis intented) all over the country are buying, replacing their gear with motoport stuff. I'm getting to be an old fart and don't heal as quickly as I used to, If there is gear available that will save me time and money on the healing end, I'm willing to spend a little extra on the front end. We all know it's going to happen. Just a matter of opportunity and probability. ....no, I don't have any financial or other interest in the company... ;~) Chuck C San Diego, CA

I highly recommend the Olympia Moto Sports Bushwhacker 3/4 Mesh Jacket and Airglide 2 Mesh Tech Pants. I have never been hot wearing them even @ Grand Canyon last week (97 degrees). They breath extremely well and reflect most of the heat away. The waterproof liners that come with them are ridiculously warm. You must be careful selecting a size as they are cut to fit perfectly, forcing you to stay in shape. Kevin A17

I recently bit the bullet and got the ultra II kevlar mesh pants, jacket, and liners. Though I'm quite happy with it, I wasn't going to respond in this thread because it's, oh, 6 times Vlad's price point. But I could afford it, and I commute 12 miles of busy los angeles streets every day. Seemed worth getting the best protection I could find. They make my previous gear - FG Kili Air Jacket & HT Air Overpants, and a Tourmaster jacket & pants combo after that - seem like toys. The First Gear stuff was destroyed in a get-off, and the tourmaster I bought because it was cheap and available and I wanted to get back on the bike. But it's hot (non-mesh), and the pants don't zip down the sides so I ended up not wearing them often. The motoport has FAR more armor than either of those sets of gear, but still seems to stay quite cool. The liners are also very warm. It's bulky stuff, and not exactly super stylish. But you're on a KLR, right? I feel like the purchase was worth it, and that this set of gear will last me for a very long time. I also feel like the getoff that shredded my FirstGear suit would barely scratch this stuff (and according to their site, they'll repair or replace after an accident!) erik

Vlad and Chuck, I did get my Motoport suit after the November Julian TechDay, ordered right there in fact. I got the closed mesh stretch Kevlar and it has been the best farkle I've gotten for myself since my Bates RR suit in 1973. Either it shrank or I expanded!! Anyway, the Motoport is just about broken in and it is very comfortable, although not very light weight with the liners in it. With the only windbreaker liner in, it's good down to about 40F. With both liners in it's good to below freezing. When we had that mini hot spell a couple of weeks back, it was excellent with both the liners removed. The material flows air exceptionally well and kept me cool while riding through Borrego at 90F. It's a bit pricey, but it's worth it. Buddy

I have a Motoport Ultra (probably 7 or 8 years old at this point) and it's a great jacket. Unfortunately, the best way I can describe it is "frumpy". I like it better than my Stich, especially because I can simply pack the liner and be ready for any rain or weather down to ~20 degrees. The one odd thing that you have to remember about the jacket is that the pockets are not waterproof! Also, because the shell is completely permeable, my first ride in it in heavy rain was odd, the jacket was soaked, but I perfectly dry, and when I stopped at the gas station, the jacket continued to drain. The cashier gave me the stink eye when she saw the enormous puddle growing underneath me. Also, don't criticize the FG stuff for destructing in a crash. It might be designed to do just that, basically reducing and redirecting the forces of the crash from your body to the materials, stitching and the like, destroying them in the process. Same for a helmet. If I crashed and my helmet looked like a pile of shredded fiberglass but completely protected my head, I certainly wouldn't say that the helmet sucked because it wasn't in one piece afterward! I've also found that my Marsee mesh jacket with a cheap rubber rain coat thrown over it is very versitile, though not fashionable. It flows better than my Motoport, but obviously is only a one or two season (at most) jacket. For good deals on gear, I've had great service from the folks at newenough.com Z DC

At the "hints" of my wife. I decided I better stay home... But, this weekend is the Carl Struthers Memorial Ride. They will meet at Carl's Cycle Sales on State St. at 9:00 am. The rides will be 100 miles and BBQ lunch to follow. -Andy
