Hey all, What's the best, most convenient material to use as a spacer for the fork springs? PVC pipe? If so, what size PVC pipe should I pick up at the local Home Depot? Clark, Potatoes, tomatoes... You failed to ask what was the most popular igniter used in the PVC spud gun. Now that was said, I have no idea what caliber PVC you shoud use, as I don't have an 'open carry permit' for a PVC spud gun. I would use the PVC that fit inside the fork tube...bigger than .45 caliber but I think smaller than a 30mm gattling gun, but I could be wrong about the caliber. YMMV (It will be at least thursday before I can give you the size of pipe I used, but i am thinking it would be ~1 inch) revmaaatin.

The stock spacer dimension is 1.122" x 5.510" for my A-16. A assume that it would be the same for most others. 3/4" schedule 40 PCV water pipe works great;-)

Myself, having grown up on a potato farm in northwestern NB Canada, I would have to say that I have made several attempts at different designs of spud guns. IMHO by far the best fuel is butane, and the best igniter is one from a BBQ. VBG I have peeked in my yet to be installed farkle box, and I happen to have brand new progressive springs. The installation instructions note: "Stock Spacer may be shortened to fit" or "Spacers are not included, they may be fabricated from Aluminum or PVC pipe". Another smaller piece of paper mentions "spacer = 2.00" . I am assuming this is length. Progressive suspension has a PDF of fork spring models and tech data at: www.progressivesuspension.com/PDF/7100-105.pdf I will take the stock spacer out with me to the hardware store and find myself a piece of aluminum pipe of the correct diameter when I do mine. Somehow PVC just doesn't feel right, and I'm worried the stuff will disintegrate over time inside the forks.

I have a set of Progressive springs with the included spacers from Fred on the bench. If I get over this flu bug, I'll measure them tomorrow and let you know what I find out. I did look in the box and noticed the included spacers were PVC. I was kinda suprised; I was expecting metal spacer but I figure Progressive must know what they are doing. I think PVC pipe is pretty strong in compression although there would be some additional peace of mind switching to metal spacers. Maybe some of the others have some experience with the subject. <><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> zaner32, I've only made a set of spacers once for the KLR and that was for Martin Earl. I think I used 3/4" pipe but just don't remember for sure. My suggestion is to measure the springs and get something that will give you good coverage on the spring end. I do know for sure it was metal pipe. As I recall Martin was given a few suggestions on spacer length and I think we made 2 1/2" spacers to start. Then I made a couple of 2 3/8" and 2 1/8" spacers so he'd be able to experiment a bit. I don't think he ever got around to that as he ate some dirt and gave up his summer. : ) Since I'm kind of anal retentive ( I like perfectionist better) so I made the spacers in the lathe so I was sure the ends were square. I've heard so much about using PVC that I have trouble believing it doesn't work as advertised. But I'd be cleaning my forks when I changed springs and oil and then again after 10K miles so I guess it wouldn't matter much. Check out the copper pipe fittings. You should be able to find a coupler of the right diameter which is 2" long. Walt

Make sure that you are comparing apples to apples. First do you have stock springs or Progressive springs? My stock spring spacers are 5.5" long and apparently Progressive spring spacers are in the 2" range. Why are you considering spring spacers? If you have stock springs and are concerned with fork dive when braking then I would suggest putting in spacers of 3/4" PVC pipe 6" long and try it or perform a sag adjustment to get front and rear right. I performed a sag adjustment after I lowered mine and it handles great now.
