x ring chain on a klr?

Hi, this is my first post, regular reader trying to learn.. My bike is an A14 with 20000 km I bought new. Ever since approx 6000 km it will only take 2 liters to change the oil and filter.... At that time it had the scheduled break in service at the dealer and regular oil changes and had sat 2 yrs. I had also built 1 inch lowering links but dont think that would change the oil level significantly. A nagging gf kept me too busy to investigate at the time and i have just kept riding it. I did the doohickey at 16000 km couldnt see anything or anywhere that might be holding back oil. I will take the right case sides off when the weather warms up but can't imaging a 1/2 liter blog in the crank case. I wondering if anyone has seen this or can suggest what happened, thanks in advance doug.

The oil level on the KLR is not accurate I couldn't get 2.5 quarts in my bike, the last time it only took 2.25 at best. Either way as long as you have the oil just at the top of the sight glass when parked on level ground and the bike straight up you should be fine. Kerry

Hi Jeff, As you descrided, I change my oil and filter, (i hold it vertical, rock it left and right to get every last drop out, takes a while) and add 2 fresh liters, run the engine and let it settle, and with the bike level and vertical check the site glass and the oil is alway at the top mark in the window. It burns some oil on the highway and from memory its 300 ml from the bottom mark to the top mark in the site glass so I am running with only 1.7 liters when its at the bottom mark but still in the site glass!!! Yep, Elden Carl theorizes that the factory forgot to re-calibrate the oil sight glass when going from 600 to 650 ccs displacement. He recommends tipping the bike to the left a bit and filling accordingly. "Misconceptions" from Area 51.5 are stranger than fiction. I could be wrong, but didn't they once say that Kawasaki forgot to carry-over the doohickey torsion spring from the KLR500? Watch out for the vortex! Fred

As long as the KLR has the oil level even close to the bottom of the sight glass there is more than enough oil for the most extreme angle of operation which the designers though would be possible. Ditto temperature. You will be far worse off having it over filled than near the low level. Over filling can cause the oil to come into contact with rolling components which is not intended. This contact can cause air to be whipped into the oil, expanding the oil volume and further expanding the oil volume radically. Oil froth will reduce oil film protection and oil pressure. KLRs have no oil system issues so don't bother with this red herring. It comes up on a six month cycle and just wastes a bunch of space on the list. Please don't waste your time and attention on such a silly issue! Put some oil in it and ride the thing! You'd be better off spending your time waxing the spokes. Really! Norm, Is it true that modern synthetic spoke wax offers an aerodynamic advantage over carnauba wax? I heard the new stuff decreases rolling resistance and increases top speed by 10%. True? doug in dc - who also likes to wax his brake pads and rotors for smoother, shinier stops Norm Keller wrote:

I use plain ole Turtle Wax myself... Speaking of that.. if you want I will leave mine as they are for now, if'n you like you can stop by and try your new synth wax on them, but they are kinda dirty.. Actually managed to find some mud out there today even though it was only 25 F out there, little bit of snow, and alot of ice... Had fun however. Dooden A15 Green Ape
