2 liter oil change?

Post by stn240 » Fri Feb 23, 2007 9:22 am

Hi, this is my first post, regular reader trying to learn.. My bike is an A14 with 20000 km I bought new. Ever since approx 6000 km it will only take 2 liters to change the oil and filter.... At that time it had the scheduled break in service at the dealer and regular oil changes and had sat 2 yrs. I had also built 1 inch lowering links but dont think that would change the oil level significantly. A nagging gf kept me too busy to investigate at the time and i have just kept riding it. I did the doohickey at 16000 km couldnt see anything or anywhere that might be holding back oil. I will take the right case sides off when the weather warms up but can't imaging a 1/2 liter blog in the crank case. I wondering if anyone has seen this or can suggest what happened, thanks in advance doug.

doug, You don't say but I'm guessing you mean when you have two liters of oil in the engine the oil is at the mark on the case next to the sight glass. Am I close? If so... that's really about the 2 liter mark on my engine. I've measured the oil as I filled the engine after an oil change. I put in two liters and then ran the engine for a minute and then let the oil settle. It was really near the mark on the case that indicates 2.5 liters and full. Then I did another 250ccs of oil and ran the engine again. Again I checked where the oil level was in the sight glass. Finally I added the last 250ccs of oil to make it 2.5 liters and the bubble in the sight glass was gone. So now I know if I see a bubble in my site glass I can add a bit of oil if needed. So far my KLR doesn't use any oil between oil changes at the longest interval I've done of just over 1,700 smiles. Also make sure your bike really is level and vertical when you check the oil level. Having it on the side stand will give a false reading.
