advice on purchase of new klr

Post by Fred Zucker » Fri Feb 17, 2006 12:56 pm

I weigh aprox 178 lbs., 5' 11", and can straddle the stock seat on a klr with no problem with both feet on the ground. I'm just concerned aobout my weight vs the bikes weight. I have been riding an xt225 dual purpose bike and there's quite a difference in weight. I will not be trail riding, just back roads and dirt roads fire roads etc. Any comments from lighter riders like me ??? Appreciate any feedback.

Yea, I guess you're pretty lite, but you ain't no feather! HHHAAAAARRRRR!!!!! I dragraced an XR650 dude in the sand in Florida a couple months ago. Dude couldn't have been 130lbs. http://media.putfile.com/Holeshot91 He told me later he was dissapointed at his performance since he knew I carry all my tools and a 12v air compressor on the Hoss wherever I go. You'll do fine on the Mighty KLR and pretty sure you'll get enticed by the dirt like the rest of us! Rod http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/zrod73026/detail?.dir=42b1&.dnm=abc7re2.jp g&.src=ph

I think that you will adjust to it. To me it is not that big of an issue as it is just a matter of getting comfortable and knowing the tolerances of the bike. CS -----Original Message-----

You will barely know the difference. There are chicks about half your weight riding Harleys. By the way, you aren't that light. You are the right weight for your size, and that size is above average for the average human of all races. Jeff A20 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Fred, we're about the same size and weight. When I bought my KLR, I had never even sat on one, let alone taken one for a ride. I was also tooling around on a Yamaha XT-225 (my brother's), a KDX-200, and a KLX-300. I was also a bit worried about the height and weight, but in everything but the tightest trails, boulder strewn areas, hill climbs, etc, I have had no problems at all. I actually took the KLR into those tight trails, boulder strewn areas, and hill climbs, and it did it "OK" - but you sure feel the weight penalty then! On the paved roads, gravel roads, dirt roads and fire trails, I wouldn't trade the KLR for anything. The only time I choose something other the KLR is when the riding will be 100% off-road. Even though I have street bikes to ride, it's still usually the KLR even when there is no off-roading planned - since you never know what opportunity might arise, the KLR gets all the riding time! It's picking it up that matters. If you can do it by yourself, ride on. When full of fuel the lean angle is pretty narrow before gavity takes over. If the ground is uneven or you are on a sidehill, try not to stop and if you do lean uphill. Get the right guards and in during the inevitable, jump out of the way. --Jim A-15

fred, i am almost exactly your dimensions. you will love and appreciate the power and momentum of the klr650 for road oriented dual sporting. Being light like me, it is very difficult to stop the bike's momentum when it starts to tip. don't expect to take the klr where you'd take the xt- 225. the klr is a blast for dual sporting. hang on to the trail bike. I love my klr and my tt-r250 for technical trail riding.

My advice: 1. Eat more wheaties. 2. Don't fill the gas tank all the way up when you're heading into the dirt. -at least until you're used to it... Mike Escondido, CA A20 hijklr wrote:
