I bought an '02 KLR 650 from an abusive, neglective bastard in August.
The bike is now (and probably was when I bought it) burning oil like
crazy--a full quart every couple hundred miles. The kawasaki dealer
here in sc is terrible and I dont really want to trust them for
anything so I was wondering if anyone might know why I'm burning so
much oil and what I can do about it. It isnt leaking, it burns a lot
on startup in the morning and not so much when I ride it.
It is a commuter and a liesure bike for me. I take it on the trails
and hills every weekend and it stands the punishment. I get generally
50-52 MPG.
Also, 1st gear seems a little weak when I start off after a stop. It
almost feels like I am starting in second--is that normal?
Just FYI--this thing is a bitch to pop-start after sitting for a
while.
Anyway, email or reply to this with help.
Thanks,
Shlomo

Hmmm. These two points make me think that you're leaking oil past your valves, and that your valves may be out of adjustment or possibly even damaged. If you get blue smoke at startup it generally means that oil has seeped past the valve seats and guides. Have you popped the top off and taken a look inside? Hope you got a good deal... that motor probably needs some $erious help. -- Blake Sobiloff San Jose, CA (USA)> Just FYI--this thing is a bitch to pop-start after sitting for a > while.

First, adjust the valve clearances. I'll bet the starting and off-idle weakness will improve. Smoking on startup sounds like valve guide seals, But if you are going through a quart every couple hundred miles you could be in for guides as well. I'd say rings, too, but your gas mileage is good enough that you may be lucky.> I bought an '02 KLR 650 from an abusive, neglective bastard in August. > The bike is now (and probably was when I bought it) burning oil like > crazy--a full quart every couple hundred miles. Are they "valve guide", or "valve stem" seals?

FWIW, for the last 12 months or so I have been filtering out all NKLR B.S. and saving technical information that has been sent out on this list serve. I now have 3 Word files that contain information that may be of interest to those not interested in the superfluous opinions that too often get sent out. I'd be willing to share this membership info, so if you think you might be interested, shoot me an e-mail and I will reply to you with the files as attachments. Keep in mind that I cannot take credit (or blame!) for any of the info contained in the files. What's there is simply a compilation of what I consider to be worthy information as a result of inquiries posted on this list serve.
Regards,
Paul
