The XR is a dirt bike. It is designed to tear up the
dirt, and it does it well. It is more powerful, better
torque, and is designed to get dirty.
The KLR is 50% street machine, and does the dirt good,
road good, has an incredibly reliable design, and can
handle givi luggage for round' the world trips like a
pro. Parts are cheap and readily available on the
entire planet.
The XR is a samarai sword, designed for killing, and
is irreplaceable ($ replaceable) the KLR is a swiss
army knife, sure it can kill, but it can open beer
cans and you can burn ants with the magnafying glass.

The XRL and KLR are 2 manufactures design approaches for the same purpose, a
Dual sport.
The XR650R was designed to be the off road Killer that someone had
mentioned. The 650L was design to be the on / off road all purpose bike.
I think the KLR has the 650L beat for on road use.
Biggest reason for me is that the KLR is liquid cooled and the 650L is air.
That is a very import thing when on hot days you are stuck in traffic, the
KLR can sit there all day with no issues (yes the KLR also needs air cooling
but it is not as critical as the 650L). The 650L needs air moving over the
engine to keep it cool so sitting in traffic for 45min and not moving is bad
unless you keep stopping and starting the bike.
I've seen more KLR's on the road than 650L's, I think they just have a
bigger following.
I've done things a bit different. I'm selling my KLR600 and I just put a
deposit down on a 2000 XR650R that is Mass street legal. The selling points
for me on the 650R is it's size and weight are smaller than the KLR, it is
liquid cooled also, more after market parts support, OEM parts are cheaper
and I like the looks better.
KLR vs. XR650L
KLR better looking
KLR better on road / long trip use
KLR liquid cooled
KLR more options (racks, parts....)
Go with the KLR

The latest (October) issue of "Road Runner" magazine, besides being one
of the best all around MC magazines in circulation, has a 650 dual sport
comparison of the Honda XR650L, Suzuki DR650, KLR650 and BMW F650GS
Dakar.
Out of four reviewers two of them picked the KLR650 and those who
favored dirt riding more went for the XR650L.
The last two and upcoming issues of "Dual Sport News" contain a
three-part review of the XR650L.

With an aftermarket gas tank, the XR-L becomes much more like the KLR,
only air-cooled instead of water cooled. I've done a couple of 1500
mile summer adventure tours through southern Utah with a friend who
has an XR-L and his bike did just as well as mine. Yes, the Honda is a
better dirt bike, but it's not that bad of a street bike, either. And
it's far from being a dirt-only machine like the R (?) model. I'd say
the KLR's main advantages off the showroom floor for are range and
ease of carrying stuff, but you can buy racks for the XR. It's a tough
decision, but if you're going to compare the XR and KLR, you might as
well include in the equation. The XR and DR are more alike each other
than the KLR is to either.
Final advice: Buy the KLR and spend your time with a groovy bunch of
guys who rarely agree on anything.
