Hello,
I wish someone could point me in the right direction : my bike is
experiencing serious engine misses, a bit like it's out of gas. It
feels like I'm in a rodeo. When that happens, which is most of the
time, the tachometer goes completely crazy. It had been going
increasingly crazy over the last year, but I'd never experienced any
engine misses before. At first, the misses occured mostly a high
speeds, but that's not the case anymore.
I checked a few things out:
- replaced the spark plug
- tightened the plug cap
- emptied the tank and checked out the fuel filter ; it was clean
- emptied the carburetor; I thought there might have been a deposit
- cleaned the air filter
- filled the tank with high-grade fuel
I took the bike for a spin and it ran fine for a good while (30km),
all the way up to 110 km/h. But when I took it to 130 km/h, it started
going crazy again. It stalled a few time on the highway...not a very
good feeling.
I know the KLR FAQ mentions the ignition box for tachometer troubles,
but the fact that the bike ran fine for a good 30kms (at reasonable
speeds) make me wonder.
What should I be checking for next?
Thanks for any help,
jp

engine misses - "out of gas" feeling - tachometer going wild
maybe you got wacky tachy, this has been linked to black/yellow wires
under seat/battery, cdi and coil areas. also a recent report of lose
plug wire into coil. that wire twists onto a sheet metal screw
looking terminal. Easy to unwind after a few maint. sessions.
the missing makes me wonder about the plug wire. or saftey switches.
I've had wacky tachy a couple of times and I could force it by
jiggling wires around the cdi and under the seat. Never had the miss
though.
FWIW the ealiy cdi's din't have the black yellow, I do know my bike
will run w/o it connectected. Just get the tachy thing.
Worst case would be cdi. or inside left cover. But don't think so.
Despite all tproblems w/ the klr posted to this list. I'd trust it
over any other bike anywhere else.
