I've searched the KLR archives back over a year looking for a thread recommending a good entry level GPS unit. I've found several brands mentioned relating to mounts, power sources and such. Could someone recommend a good entry level unit that I could use on my KLR. It will probably be more of a toy than a necessity for finding my way around. Would like to stay under $500 bucks for a unit and mount. Thanks Todd

Hey Todd, For a reasonable unit I really liked my Garmin eTrex legend (not the Legend 'C') mounted with a RAM handlebar mount (http://www.cycoactive.com/ram/rametrex.shtml). Gave me really good service on a 3400 mile roadtrip last year on my 84 Goldwing Standard. Wish someone hadn't stolen it............ Bah... -don

I would second this. I have one as well, and find that it does everything I need it to do. That said, one of the pricier units would be nice. Buy what you can afford. don cain wrote:

Todd I was certainly happy with an Etrex Summit (no mapping), when I was looking for a mapping unit I went with a Magellan Meridian Gold, because their mapping was so much better for where I live (Australia) than Garmins. Obviously I can't comment on USA mapping. Gavin A18 Broadford Victoria Australia

Personally I just need the GPS to keep a track for me when I am in the deep boonies. The Garmin Etrex Legend at $160 works great. However, it failed when zip tied to the handlebars (kept shutting off due vibration) so I attached it to the sleeve of my Fammz Kevlar jacket. Pretty easy to read there too. Though I do get strange looks from people with what looks like a cel phone on my arm.... --- gavinmacfarlane wrote:

Todd, I cannot recommend Garmin products enough - I really like the Garmin Etrex Vista as a great little travelling GPS. It has both land mapping (decent mapping included - and expandable) and limited navigational mapping (sea, also expandable). Having owned 7 GPS's and travelled 15,000 NM + 200,000 since I stared carrying GPS's. I really like the features on my little Vista for geocaching and general travel. The Garmin Etrex Vista is also very, very intuitive - I have never even referred to the instructions! I use other Garmin's on the sailboat... Cheers, David wahooadv@... end of message

Garmin GPS III+ or IV. Super solid, lots of em available used. IV has auto-routing and more memory. For more pesos look at the Garmin 276C. Fast processor, memory expansion, awesome screen. Always used RAM mounts and never had a problem. Riley A15 Montreal

How about a happy medium? Look at the Garmin 60C/CS or the 76C/CS. Garmin is currently offering a $50 rebate on these as well. Mark

Has anyone tried the Lowrance iFinder H20 ([]http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jhtml?id=0028183017032a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnString=hasJS=true&_D%3AhasJS=+&%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberFinder.giftCertificateURL=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Ftemplates%2Fgiftcertificate%2Fgiftcertificate.jhtml%3Fid%3D0005586990011a%26podId%3D0005586%26catalogCode%3DIB%26navAction%3Djump%26indexId%3D&_D%3A%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberFinder.giftCertificateURL=+&QueryText=ifinder+h20&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jhtml.24&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=ifinder+h20&noImage=0&returnPage=search-results1.jhtml])? There's a "Plus" version that comes with mapping software. The GPS seems to compare pretty well with the low-end Garmins, and it takes generic MMC cards, which could easily convince me to choose it over a Garmin. -Lujo Tengai Mark Van Horn wrote:

klr check list

Post by mrodub » Mon Mar 28, 2005 9:33 am

There was a VERY long thread last week about new bike prep. I think it was called "Buying my KLR on Friday..." Check it out, a lot of useful info. Mike
