Does anyone wear a modular helmet? What name brand and model? Your opinions please. I'm considering an HJC Sy Max.

I had, and still have a HJC, Symax, but don't use it anymore. I found it to be noisier than a regular full face helmet, but the worst thing about it was that it would leak when riding in rain. Even though I wear glasses and the Symax was very convenient, I still prefer a fully closed full face helmet, and I also think it would offer better protection in a crash. Just my .02 worth, and that is Canadian cents. Gorm L., BC, Canada mowrem wrote: Does anyone wear a modular helmet? What name brand and model? Your opinions please. I'm considering an HJC Sy Max. I have the Symax. Only had it for half of last season but find the flip up very convenient. They are noisier but on any long trips I have ear plugs in anyway and that is fine then. If you query modular helmets on google you will find many test that were done. I would buy another one. Dave A16, A18 Labrador

I like my Schuberth Concept. You can get them for about 1/2 price on ebay. While noisier than most full-face helmets, I find it to be substantially quieter than my cheap Zeus 508. It's extremely comfortable and doesn't leak in the rain. Mark

I have a Nolan N100E Classic Plus and an HJC Symax. I like the Nolan better, though like all modular helmets it's noisy even when closed. Of the modular helmets I've tried the Nolan seems to fit my head the best. I also like the anti-fog shield they come with. I ordered mine from www.helmetharbor.com and talking to them on the phone it seems more customers are happy with the Nolans than any other modular type of helmet. You're mileage may vary. The Symax is great in good weather. It sucks in bad weather. The problem is that the face shield doesn't seal well, letting water run down the inside. This may have been complicated somewhat by my large windshield, but it definitely led to some wet cheek pads and thus not as much comfort and weather protection as I'd like. It's also very loud. Even on slow speed rides it's advisable to wear earplugs. And the "ventilation" doesn't. In very cold weather, if you're wearing a bulky scarf to keep your neck warm that interferes with air coming up from below, it will fog unless you crack the visor open slightly. Doesn't matter how you set the vents, they appear to be decorative only. That said, for bopping around town in good weather it's great, especially for people with glasses. -E

Which brings to mind another issue: Buying a helmet without trying it on is (doh) stupid. Helmet shapes vary, head shapes vary, if the helmet shape doesn't match your head shape you will be miserable. So the "best" helmet that we blather about may not be the "best" helmet for you. -E

I have a Symax and it's usually the one I pick for general purpose riding. I also have a Shoei Duo-Tec, and (non-flip ups) a couple of RF-R's, and a new KBC VR1. HJC and KBC helmets seem to fit my head better. I guess I have a "Korean shaped head"! I'm sort of a convert after a lifetime of wearing Shoei helmets. I tried on an Arai XD and it felt like it pressed really tight against my forehead. Mike

I've used a Nolan N100 for several On/Off-road trips. It's noisier than a non-flip, and I'm sure it won't protect my face as well, but it's very handy if you stop a lot for pictures. The catches don't work as well once they're dusty, so it's a little hard to lift the front piece. The Jarow helmet with a flip-down sun visor is nice, too, but seems a little heavy. I've moved on to an Arai XD. __Arden

Good point. Shoei and HJC fit me well. Arai seems narrow to me. I guess every head's a little different.
