up coming best dual sport 650?
Hello everyone,
I don't know if any of you guys read Dual Sport News, but the editor
has claimed there's a new 650 single Dual Sport on the horizon that
will be the best Dual Sport ever. He won't say what it is yet because
he's been sworn to secrecy. Have any of you caught wind of such a
tale? So far all I've dug up are rumors that Kawasaki might throw a
v-twin in the KLR frame. Obviously that wouldn't be a single - but
it's something I've from a dual sporter who was in a Kawasaki shop and
looking at a v-twin engine on a different when a sales rep asked him
if he needed help. He said, yeah how about putting this engine in the
KLR frame. The sales rep responded by saying, "just wait, it'll be
here." Now that doesn't address the "New best ever single," but it's
something to think about. And I've read that Suzuki might revamp
their 650 after the success of their DRZ400 for release within two
years. I've been searching the net trying to find everything out that
I can, so if any of you have any news or rumors of something new and
better coming our way, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks, James Beatty

Hi All
Checked with a buddy of mine who works for Kawasaki...
he says the new bike is essentially a KLR with new
48mm forks, EFI and a 6 speed transmission. The head
has been redesigned for better airflow and has dual
sparkplugs. He expects the bike to be officially
announced 4/1/2005.

If its true, that release date sounds legit. You can't sit on a release
once the public hears about it, because sales of the old model starts drying
up.

Well, we know that any replacement for the KLR will need EFI and a dual-sparkplug head in order to pass the new emissions standards. The rest... such as the timing of this replacement... well, who knows? -E> Wow!!! > Now, do we believe this?

Randall, even with your well-chosen "April Fools" date a lot of guys are buying this hook, line and sinker. Shows you how badly some guys want the changes. Well done!

"inferior poseur"
That's quite an assumption for a bike we know very little about.

That may be true of "ordinary" vehicles. But I suspect that, as with the
Jeep Cherokee (another long-running vehicle -- 20 years!), the result of
people hearing that their beloved classic is going to be replaced with an
inferior poseur is to drive up sales during the last days of the old
classic. The KLR isn't like a crotch rocket, where a "new and improved"
model comes out every four years on the dot that obsoletes the old one.
When you have a model that's been on the market for close to 20 years, it
has an inertia all its own that doesn't stop just because a replacement
has been announced.
