bottom end rattle
Gurus' of the group, need a Little advice. My 2002 650 has a new
noise this winter. When the beast is cold, below 50 degrees ambient,
the lower left side has a rattle. First thought is the doohickey. I
dropped a Sagebrush in at 9k, and I am at 28k right now. It should be
fine. When it is warm there is no noise. I run the freeways alot at
6000 rpm on the tach, so its real hard to tell if there is excessive
vibration, but she does vibrate hard. I don't think 28k is alot of
miles, are there parts/guides I should be looking at for wear at this
age of the bike? I religiously do the maintenance and a little anal
about the details. Do I need to open up this baby again, or am I just
paranoid?
Thanks in advance,

Tony,
You have to loosen the adjusting bolt and allow them to self-adjust periodically. This compensates for chain wear, else the timing will be off (vibration), and they can make a noise.
You done that lately?

Folks,
I'm no expert but the Service manual says loosen it off to the tune of 2
or 3 turns. I'm open to correction but that should read 2/3 of a turn,
IMNVHO.

Oops... I only half read the previous post. Although I only get
rattles on cold starts in the winter when using 20w50 and even 10w40
in extreme cold, did you adjust the balancer tensioner lately? It's
supposed to be done every 6,000 miles or something. I only touch it
when noise develops. Balancer chain noise usually manifests itself
when the engine is warm on my bikes though.

Guys, A16tony again. I am running 10/40 synthetic (Honda), change it
every 2500mi and adjust the doohickey evey oil change. Do you think
the doohickey could be hung up? Thanks again.

Tony,
Maybe not 'hung up' but perhaps the sproing in the spring has reached the end of its elasticity; it's coil-bound.
There seem to be some issues on the proper spring length for different bikes. It may be that yours is too long and is not providing the proper tension to the doohickey (when loosened) to take up the slack in the chain. Unfortunately, the only true way to find out is to pull the alternator (OK, generator) cover and observe the tension on the spring. If it's loose, you need to get a shorter one that will apply more tension to the doohickey to pull it around and the guides can take up the slack in the chain(s).

tony,
i had a rattle on my that was only really noticable when starting up
and seemed intermittent. what it turned out to be was a missing
thrust washer behind one of the sets of starter gears. it might be
worth checking this out perhaps even one of those little plastic
cased needle bearing has gone on you. i replaced mine with good
quality steel encased needle bearings just to be on the safe side
after having one of them go inside on my transmission input shaft,
and ruining the motor i might add. so worth a look at the starter
gear sets and their respective thrust washers and bearings.
hope you figure it out.
glenski - young but sadly know too much about the klr motor
