doohickey trouble or not??
I'm a recent purchaser of a 2001 KLR650. The prior owner put about
1000 miles on, and the first about 2500. The bike now has 4500
miles, and it seems like to my untrained ear there is an excessive
amount of "clunking" coming from the engine, particularly at very
low engine RPM's...almost like right off idle. It's particularly
noticeable when chugging around, or as I said if I just blip the
throttle ever so slightly just off idle.
This is my first KLR, and I certainly did a great deal of reading of
them before I made the purchase. The bike is exactly what I wanted,
but I want to somehow make sure the engine isn't in self destruct
mode or something.
I understand all about the balancer chain tensioner system, what can
go wrong, and how to fix it with the several replacements out there.
My concern is not really knowing if this is the source of the noise.
I performed the chain adjustment a couple times, but the noise
remains.
I know I can remove the side case and take a peek, but before I do
I'm sort of looking for some advice from a seasoned owner who can
take my description of the low speed "clunking" and tell me yes,
that's a very typical noise for this engine. Just a little above
idle to near redline the engine sounds great.
Any comments??

Try adjusting your idle speed up some, it might just be the KACR
attempting to engage. (K.awi A.uto C.ompression R.elease for starting)
Somebody will no doubt respond with the "proper" idle speed.
I hear this also when at really low RPM.
BTW a 650 single does not like to lug, can only imagine bad things
happening to it if you lug the motor alot.
Enjoy the ride

Where about you live, maybe there is a seasoned KLR rider near you.

I wrote the almost exact same message years ago, and thousands of other riders new to the KLR have thought and asked the same thing. It's totally normal, don't sweat it. The doohicky has nothing to do with it. As for the doohicky, anything from mild to wild can happen if you don't replace it, so do it ASAP and you won't have to worry about it. I gotta take a shower and get outta here, time for ESR. Talk with you all when I get back. I've got to keep my RPS's above 2500 or it clunks a lot. Accelerating from
1000 to 2500 is out of the question. I attribute this to the thumper nature
of the engine. After 2500 there is no problem. I've got 4000 miles on my
2001 and am anxious to hear the comments from the more experienced out
there.

I don't seem to have any problems accelerating from 1000 rpms. In fact, I
can easily wheelie in first gear just by wrapping the throttle from about
1200 rpm. I don't seem to get any excessive noise, and I have yet to do the
doohickey upgrade as well.
Don't know if this helps, but it is my experience so far.
Ride safe.

doohickey trouble or not??
dr. j : i too just bought a 01 klr 650 with 2200 miles on it, for 2800.00, a very good deal if i say so myself after pricing them. and i ,like you did consciderable research on the bike before buying it. i have experienced the exact same sounds coming from my klr at comparable rpm's it was so noticable that i took it back to the dealer had the mechanic check things out and all is normal... apparently this a normal sign and symptom inherent to the klr....nothing to worry about. my mechanic is trustworthy and i'll take his word. dont sweat it! all is good... i'm not worried! now lets hear from other 01 klr riders with longer term experience. p.s. I LOVE THIS BIKE! IT IS EVERYTHING I WAS LOOKING FOR!

Sounds like maybe the idle mixture is too lean. There is a nice
procedure somewhere on how to adjust it, and it includes drilling out
a plug on the bottom of the carb to get to the screw. Not too hard,
and worth the effort (on mine at least).
