a18 klr650 <500 miles leaking

http://www.matus1976.com/motorcycles/leak/klr_leak.htm Click on any picture for a larger one, I discovered a leak on my A-18 after a shorter ride. The long yellow arrow above points to a small blue drop hanging from the silver pipe. The leak appears to be coming from the coolant container. The additionally arrows show places where the liquid has leaked and splashed onto the motorcycle parts. The yellow circle also shows the general area where all of the leaking coolant appears to land. Also note the yellow arrow above pointing to a mounting screw hole. Amazingly there was no screw actually in this hole, although there was on the other side Here you can see the two areas the leak seems to be coming from. The two plastic clips that make up a sandwich pointed at by the smaller of the two arrors. I am just about to do my 500 mile maintains, should I fix this leak myself or hand the bike over to the shop for warranty repair work? I'm voting for the latter so far. Michael

Check to see if you have a hose that goes from the top of the overflow tank out to the back of the bike. My A18 did the exact same thing, and the hose was missing (it's about 5' long too). I ended up taking the seat, gas tank and front plastic off to fix it. Otherwise your dealer might be on crack and forgot to tighten the cap on the overflow tank. Over 1000 miles and no more leaking. Nothing wrong with warranty repair if is done well. The trouble is that "well" is few and far between. If you plan to use the dealer mostly in the life of your bike then just do it that way. If you plan to "do it yourself" mostly (as most here do) then you should find the leak yourself and only use warranty if you need a replacement coolant tank or other expensive part. Odds are good that it is just a hose or similar. You mentioned a missing nut/bolt I think. This is the norm unless you have re-done everything with lock tight. The dealer that I got my bikes from has proven to me that it is not wise to let them touch the bikes. I do it all myself. -- Doug Herr doug@...

Mine did the exact same thing when I picked it up from the dealer. it was a combination of problems. the dealer filled the coolant tank all the way to the top, it would warm up, the coolant would expand, and then it would be forced through the loose filler cap. when Idrained the tank to the proper level and tightened the cap, the problem went away. do it yourself and forget the dealer. if your's is the same as mine was, i'd never go back to that dealer again. Thanks everyone for your comments. Well, apparently my dealer was on crack, or at least heroin. The cap was on, but not quite, it was clearly screwed on at the wrong angle. The black plastic piece just in front of the overflow tank had a clear dribble path which started right at the overflow cap and ended right where I was noticing the drops forming. Is there any issue with mixing the blue coolant in the A18 with the green coolant typically found in cars? (I have a new container of that) Michael
