I hope you have sense enough to not take your bike
there for service. That's not a slam on you, all
dealers pretty much suck: they charge too much and
know way too little. Buy the Clymer and factory
manuals, use the FAQ section of the group website,
watch the posts and you can pretty much do anything
yourself.

That makes me sick, I just paid $6900 for my 2004 KLR and a helmet
(cheap) at Kensington Motor Sports in New Hudson, Michigan. It was $7400
with a 3 year warranty, but I canceled the warranty. And they also
forgot to mention that the 4.99% interest is only for 18 months.

I think the MSRP is actually $4995, at least it was 6 months ago when
I got mine. I paid $5176 out the door with 8.25% sales tax, title,
license, tags, inspection, (no freight or prep charges), everything.
That works out to about $4700 for the bike alone, an A18. There are
about half a dozen dealers around here, only two had any in stock.
The other guy was selling them for about $5500 (MSRP + freight + prep)
plus tax, title, etc. It pays to shop around.
Also, if you didn't know you were paying above MSRP, that may be a
violation of the law. In most states, a dealer can charge over
sticker or MSRP only if it is clearly disclosed that that is what
they are doing. Of course, there could be $1900 of fees, add ons,
etc. but it still seems kind of high.

Yeah, my A-18 had a 4499 sticker, but after tax,
shipping, assembly, and a pay off to the Japanese mob
it was 5700 out the door. I did however take a roll of
toilet paper out of the restroom to make up the
difference. I have found bike dealers to be in the
same or worse class than car dealers. WHile I did find
one saleman to hold integrity, I later found the
dealer/service department at Lynnwood (WA) Cycle Barn
to be completely untrustworthy, and I am never ever
ever ever going back there.

I understand that dealer cost is just over $4300 on an A-18. Add tax
and tags, then the rest is gravy.

destination, prep. and doc. fees are truly dealer add ons, or "junk" fees. and
while dealerships seem to charge about $80 an hour for labor/assembly,
that's not their cost for the labor. and IIRC dealer's cost for freight is ~$350.
there's no getting around tax unless you buy used.
extended warranties are usually not worth the money. this is especialy true on
consumer electronics, but on a vehicle, it's your option.
accesories typicly have about a 50% markup... you probably could have
bought the same helmet at a discount accessory store, or online for less... the
only problem is you can't "test fit" a computer monitor to see how your helmet
fits.
best to just consider this an education in the school of hard knocks.
i bought my first motorcycle new from the dealer... but then i was young and
had money burning a hole in my pocket. now i'm a cheap bastard and can't
imagine buying a new vehicle from the dealer.
console yourself in the fact that registration for my '87 KLR was about $60+
and Nevada charges tax on private vehicle sales, in state or out of state. also,
the DMV website only gives you a rough estimate of the tax and "fees"
involved.
now, have you read about how most dealerships know nothing about the
doohickey and it's problems, or how they are notorious for not performing the
valve adjustemnt at the 500 miles tune up, and don't usually have the valve
shims in stock.
don't worry about that... they have enough of your money... if you have any
mechanical skill at all, you can perform that work yourself and save lots of
money.

Darren, did you have the bike shipped to you from the dealer or did
you pick it up? If you picked it up, it seems strange that they
would charge BOTH frieght and destination. I thought the destination
charge is what (supposedly) the dealer pays to have it shipped to
them.
