question on turn signals and gearing

Post by shultzdc » Thu Mar 04, 2004 8:17 am

Help me if you can, somebody. Just put a pair of those Acerbis hand guards with the integral turn signals on and I can't seem to get them to flash. They will light up, but won't trip the signal flasher. Bulbs too small wattage wise to work? Also, mine is a mostly street, high speed ride, and I want to lower the engine revs. Can somebody tell me how much they drop with a 16 tooth countershaft? Does it make sense to also go down a tooth on the rear? Thanks in advance for the help. shultzdc (A9 de-Barbied)

The bulbs are probably too small. If you wire them in so you have the stock turn signals AND the ones in the handgrips they will flash ( you need to wire them in parallel, not in serial). A 16t is a popular change. Going to a 42 rear would leave you overgeared a bit, nice for bumbling along but you'll find yourself changing down for passing. And hills. Devon

As for gearing I have been playing w/ the front sprockets and this is what I got to this point , A 16T at 4,500 rpm`s= 66 mph at 5,000 rpm`s = 74 mph......... W/ a 14T at 4,500 rpm`s = 57 mph at 5,000 rpm`s = 64 mph and at 5,500 rpms = 70mph ............... I`m going to switch back to the stock 15 and write those down. Keep in mind that these speeds is w/ a GPS and w/ a bike w/ a tall windshield , tank panniers

Ooh, ooh, a de-Barbied A9...no, no...oh, the humanity! LOL! Since I did the reverse on my A15, I was just curious what you de-Barbied your model into. Gee, it's a shame to see such a classic and rare model color such as the A8, A9 era desecrated in such a manner...heresy, I say...LOL! Thad Carey A15 in the classic and discriminatingly tasteful A8,A9 color.

I don`t like the 16T it`s just slow eveywhere in the

The 16T is fine for a lightly loaded KLR. But if the bike is loaded down with luggage and tools, the engine just doesn't have enough power to cope with headwinds and hills. I used a 16T on my KLR on my trip to Moab in '02. When I got to Moab I reinstalled the 15T and decided to leave the 15T installed for the return trip to Lexington, Ky. The engine felt much happier and actually got better fuel milage with the 15T. So, its my opinion that the 15T seems to be perfect for a loaded KLR on the Interstate. On this years trip to Moab I will use the 15T on the highway and change to a 14T when I get to Moab. Jim Ousley Lexington, Ky

It was in my last Old Mexico tour,,, The 16 was perfect for me and the way over loaded KLR, Now we are talking WFO running tank after tank, 90MPH to 110 all day long, Never a problem,, Had about 100lbs gear straped to the bike. Shultzdc, The 16/43 combo is a -6.66% engine speed change from the stock 15/43 combo. I'm not clear on what you did with the handguard turn signals. Did you replace the front turn signals with the handguard turn signals or are they in addition to the front signals? If they are in addition to the front turn signals you may have too much resistance in the circuit and the flasher can't handle it. If you swapped the signals then maybe you don't have enough resistance (lower wattage bulbs) in the circuit. Right now it's kind of like answering the question of how long is a piece of string?
