nklr - dvd question

Post by Hans Koenig » Sun Dec 07, 2003 2:31 pm

Trusting the proven superior intelligence and cosmopolitan mindset of the KLR listers, I am asking for technical advice: Is the U.S. DVD technology the same as the one used in Europe, specifically in Germany? That is to say, would it make sense to send a DVD from here to Germany and, more importantly, would the recipient be able to play it on his DVD player (and, actually, hear and see something - provided he's NOT blind and deaf)? TIA! Hans in Minneapolis

They are region encoded here for sure, meaning that 'gray' market Japanese DVD's won't play on our players. I'm not sure if the EU standard is the same, but I would guess it is. They do this so they can price them up to whatever the designated market can afford to pay. http://www.dvdoverseas.com/ sells 'region free' as well as macrovision free players that will play anything and also allow you to dupe them to a VCR as well....just a piece of trivia.

1 - it depends on whether you are talking about a DVD that you recorded yourself - it has no region encoding on it, and 2 - Actually Chris, the "official reasoning" is so that they can RELEASE the DVD in one market earlier than another - they "say" it has nothing to do with pricing. Ya RIGHT! -Scott

Hans, there is a "country code" issue that could give you problems. (If you're talking about a DVD that you've burned yourself, then that this shouldn't apply.) If the recipient has a computer with a DVD player, it's possible. All they would need is something like Slysoft's AnyDVD: http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html Also, with this software running, DVD copies can be made that normally can't be successfully created. I hope that helps, Mark My KLR650 Motorcycle Website: http://klr6500.tripod.com/ Our HomePage: http://home.adelphia.net/~msaint/index.html

Just be carefull with the card and not using it. The issuing bank will "close" the card after a period of inactivity (they didn't tell me exactly *how* long it is though) by making your credit limit $0 but it will still be on your credit report as an active account. Didn't make me very happy to find that one out. Rich
