Dual Sport vs. Happy Trail or Other Skid Plate Trying to decide on which after market skid plate to go with. Is Happy Trail same as Moose? I found HT and Dual Sport website - Are there others? Planning to add Center Stand, but does the shorter skid plate coverage add too much damage risk? Thanks for the feedback. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Todd, Think you mean Dual Star. Regardless, that's who I went with for no particular reason. I had a problem with one of the Allen head socket screws (bit pocket too shallow) but they sent me a couple of replacements at no charge. I'm satisfied. All, except for the White Bros plate, are the same... I believe that Utah Sportcycle makes them all and then Happy Trails and DS modify theirs to their own specs. The WB plate is more of a "bikini" plate, it's got less coverage on the sides, and is solid aluminum (no vents). Would probably be a bit lighter than the USC plate, might be an interesting alternative for a 90/10 street bike from a style perspective. AFAIK, all USC plates are cut short for a centerstand. You have to custom order a longer plate from Happy Trails. And if you're doing serious off-road I would advise both the longer plate as well as having another layer of aluminum welded to the bottom of the plate, as it is possible to dent the plate enough to crack engine cases (I know, I've got the plate and old cases to prove it). The longer plate will also help protect the suspension linkage which you can crack open as well. Z DC A5X A12X

If you need more I found the exact same fasteners at ACE Hardware --- "Guy B. Young II - COG Tech. Ed." wrote:

Hmmm? I musta hit the wrong Ace store(s). 'Course, there's probably 15 more of 'em around here. Appreciate that. I'll keep you in mind. Guy At 05:10 PM 4/23/03 -0700, W.V. Doran wrote:

For future reference, if you want to sound like you know what the hell you're talking about, they are "button head" bolts. You also need the guy at Ace to sound like he knows what the hell he's talking about. Thanks CA Stu

Not totally poz, of course, but a button head bolt with allen socket or torx might have a different shape head then a allen head socket screw. Truly a "button" look to the head as opposed to a "barrel" look to the head. What the hell, might not be true either. Anyway gotem both-makes one an expert. -----Original Message----- From: Stu [mailto:s2mumford@...] Sent: Wednesday, April 23, 2003 5:42 PM To: DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_klr650] Re: Skid Plate for New 2003 KLR 650 For future reference, if you want to sound like you know what the hell you're talking about, they are "button head" bolts. I don't give a $%#^ what name they go by...I took an original to ACE and matched it. Bought 4 and went home happy. --- Stu wrote:

The Machine shop I worked at called them socket head-cap screws, but that could be a Michigan thing Fireman Ed A17
