oil seal question

Considering buying a KLR 650.....Does anyone know what the weight capacity is of a klr 650? I realize this is not the perfect bike for 2 up riding, but if anyone has any experience 2 up riding on this bike I would appreciate any comments or advice.... good or bad. thanks in advance John

I rode through much of central and south america with a girlfriend on the back of my KLR. I *strongly* recommend upgrading the sub frame bolts. In fact *strongly* wouldn't be strong enough if you're carrying any luggage. Don't leave home with them! This we discovered in a remote part of Bolvia. We were two people, two full alu panniers and a big racksack on the tail rack. Riding offroad did get tricky at times - she had to walk through the rivers and the deeper sand, and too many highway miles with my crotch jammed up against the gas tank wasn't always ideal. But if your passengar has good protective gear, confidence in you, and an understanding of what happens when a bike is dropped, then... have fun. Toby

It runs really well even with two up. Even on steep grades. Kawasaki says the weight of rider, passenger, luggage and accessories must not exceed 401 pounds, or 182 kilograms - page 19 of the A13 owners manual. Just as a reference point, that is real close to the effective payload of most full dress touring rigs. It would appear manufacturers put in quite a bit of fudge factor for product liability protection. Had a friend who put over 70K on his BMW R100RT tourer without any frame cracks or abnormal mechanical problems. In his skivvies he weighed well over the bike's payload, plus he carried everything but the kitchen sink with him on roadtrips. He's passed away due to weight-related health problems, but before he died offered to sell me his bike at an attractive price when he could no longer ride. I didn't buy it.

I've read the replies already so I know my opinion is not a popular one: I love the KLR, but I would not consider it to be a good 'two- up' solution. The motor and the suspension just don't have what it takes to make repeated long trips fun on the KLR. For short, every now and then trips; maybe. Pat (Please don't flame me, I still think the KLR is great.)

Riding 2 up on a KLR can be done no doubt-----it can also be done on a 50cc moped. However I personally wouldn't want to do it for more than an easy day ride. Especially when my riding gets agressive and the riding gets rough-----which it usually does. Mark Sampson www.bigdogadventures.com

My wife and I ride together often. Total passenger weight around 350. We lightly load the rack. Planning an overnighter (motel, just an overnight bag on rack) on the Oregon coast this summer (a couple hundred miles). Often ride gravel logging roads, with a good passenger (holds on tight, leans into hills when stopped) no problem. Hit rough stuff offroad every now and then and the KLR bottoms out front and back, unless you go real slow. Summary: On street works great, gravel roads fine, rough stuff only in small quantities and very slow. Tom A16

I live in San Jose, CA. A local club used to host a ride called the Ridge Runner 250. It was a day run through Watsonville, Hollister Hills, Clear Creak and the surrounding areas. It started off in the early years at about 50/50 street and dirt, then as time progressed that dwindeled to about 10% dirt and the rest street. I used to ride these events with my wife on the back. I'm 200 lbs and she is just under 100lbs. I could tell you some stories, like climbing up Stage Coach road 2 up, or racing a 400 single - he was 1 up, or how we would argue as to what trail to take. I wanted the rough stuff, she wanted the easy stuff. Anyway, the bike did great. I loved the way we could run with the best of them 2 up on the dirt, yet jump on the freeway and cruise around 65 mph. One comment my wife made that I will always remember, 'The bushes rubbed right up against our legs'. A word of advice, make sure your passenger is dirt worthy, getting out once a year on the dirt just isn't a good idea.
